Be it known that LEDWARD HARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvem ents in Multiform Lounges or Settees; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an isometric view 0f my multiform lounge or settee wherein the adjustable and detachable rests orpillows forminga component and essential feature of my device are (three being shown by way of exemplification) represented at variable heights and inclinations at predetermined spots contiguous to the boundaries of the settee-top. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail (elevation) as looking toward a side of the lounge and the rear of an attached rest or pillow. Fig. 3 is a vertical section (enlarged detail) taken along dotted line :r Fig. 2; and Fig. 4: is a fragmentary detail illustrative of a slight modification of formation of the clamping members appertaining to my device, combined sectional and edge elevation.

Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

My invention has reference, broadly, to that species of household furniture variously denominated as lounges, set-tees, or couches, and other analogous supports for persons disposed in a sitting or reclining posture, and normally devoid of head or shoulder rests or pillows, or, if so, merely a single one immovably affixed to the couch or similar su pporting-body.

The object of my invention is the production of a lounge or settee of such novel construction and arrangement as to embody multiform characteristics or features, and through adjustability, variability, and detachability be of excessive value and usefulness to all persons desirous of utilizing a lounge or set tee wherein adjustability both asto the location of and degree of inclination of the component rests or pillows is readily attained.

Furthermore, the purpose of my invention is the employment of novel features in the detail construction and arrangement of parts of such av nature as to impart effectiveness, reliability, simplicity, and ineXpensiveness in the formation of and operation of a multiform article of furniture of the nature referred to.

My invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement, coadaptation, and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically enumerated in the clauses of claim hereunto annexed.

Making reference to the accompanying drawings, A denotes a rectangular-shaped body having customary side strips or pieces a and horizontal bed-piece or Iiooring b secured to the side strips for the supporting of springs and cushioning material. as usual, and the said top surface of the couch-body being provided with a covering c, of suitable textile fabric, leather, or other preferred material, as customary-all forming the cushion-like bed of the settee-which covering may, if wished, extend down and cover the side strips a, as Yindicated at c, and d indicates the legs supporting the frame and body A, (obviously four in number,) which legs may be of any preferred shape and configura-tion.

Evidently the sofa-frame, body, covering,

and legs may be of any preferred shape and ornamentation. However, an essential feature of my invention is that in my multiform device all the sides of the sofa are finished sides, whereby when same is stationed eentrally on the floor of aroom all the four sides are equally presentable to the eye, any one of them answering as a front side or end.

B is denotive of the adjustable and removable back or head rests or pillows that, in conjunction with the body A, assure the multiform characteristics of my article of furniture, and wherein, now referring to one of the pillows by way of illustration, the pillows whatever the number employed all correspending.

' l indicates a rectangular-like frame of requisite `size and of a flat shape provided at that side calculated to face the sofa-body A with a suitable cushioning materiale, covered with a satisfactorycovering f, of gured fabric, leather, or other desirable fabric, in the customary manner known to the trade, and a suitable backing g, spanning the open- IOC ing in the frame l, may be utilized for the support of the cushioning substance.

7L 7L denote holders of curvilinear shape, formed of spring metal and secured at their upper ends lineally to opposite sides of the back of the frame l of the rest or pillow I3, and contiguous the upward portion thereof, the pendent free ext-remity t' of each holder being longitudinally of a curvilinear shape, as shown, and while through proper pressure are adapted to be thrown outwardly a degree, instantaneously resume their normal state on the release of such pressure.

Obviously by upward thrust the axle portion 7;.' oll the standard will open up the pendent ends of the holders 7L sufficiently to penetrate into the bearings thereof, and thereby retained in connection with the rest or pillow frame, while when it is desired to separate the rest B from its supporting-standard all that is necessary is to give a quick upward pull to the rest or pillow, causing release of same from its standard.

8 are clamping members attached to the respective vertical lengths 711 ,7a of the standard 2 somewhere along their lower extremities, which clamp members, each of an angular or Lllike shape in edge elevation, are formed of castings of satisfactory metal. The bottom plate of the respective clamps is at a point slightly from the center provided with a modelately-elongated slot or orifice m longitudinally to said bottom piece, through which slot passes a length 7c of the standard i), having a nut 1t screwed on its threaded end, said nut being of a diameter such as will preclude its passage through the slot m, provided for the passage of the rod-section. As is apparent, the opposite parallel length l; passes through a like orifice in its attached clamp and having a similar nut on its end, The purpose of said nuts is to prevent disconnection of the clamp members from the uprights of the standard 2 when same and its supported rest or pillow B are detached from the settee -body A. Evidently any kind of protuberances on the extremities of the standard will suffice, if removable. The

inwardly-located rear plate of the respective clamps arising a requisite height terminates in a lateral forwardly-protrudin g chisel-like point or dog 0, adapted to enter slightly into the back face of the side strip of the sofa-body the clamp is being connected to, while the uprising front plate of the clamp has a central aperture suitably threaded, wherein works the threaded stem of a thumb-screw t or headed screw-bolt) p, carrying on its extremity an elongated clamp-plate or presser fr, centrally swiveled and of seginental shape in cross-section, the concaved bearing-faee being adapted to impinge and partially encompass the rod-section k of the standard 2, which my clamping member may be erected on.

Preferably, the forward plate of the L ]-like clamp member is of a somewhat greater length vertically than the rear or inner plate, thereby assuring a better holding ofthe clamp member to a side piece of the sofabody when attached.

For securinga rest or pillow B to the couchbody and at a desired inclination in reference thereto the standard .3 is so grasped as to cause the clamps to surround the bottom portion of a side strip of the settee-body, as clearly delineated in Fig. 3, and the standard being raised or lowered until the pillow is located at the inclination wished and the clamp-plates in proper relation to the uprights of the standard the thumb-screws are so turned as to entail thorough impingeinent of the uprights by the clamp-plates and holding same firmly against the external face of the side piece, said compound gripping pressure necessarily so exerting itself as to concurrently draw into the wood at the rear of the side strip the points or dogs of the back plates of the clamp members and insuring, consequently, absolute attachment of said members to the side strip and immovability of the adj usted pillow-earryin g standard. To remove the standard from attachment to the side strip, the action aforesaidis reversed.

As is evident, the higher the standard is raised the less is the degree of flat-like inclination of the rest or pillow carried. In fact, its inclination is so acute as to but properly serve the purposes of a rest for a per# sons back, and, as is evident from the drawings, the more erect the plane of the pillow the closer to the edge of the couch-bodydoes the bottom edge thereof come and bear upon and secure requisite purchase, while thelower the standard is stationed the less acute will be the pillows inclination and well serv ing as a rest for a persons head, and well brought out at the left-hand portion of Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The f ulcruming of the rest or pillow at the upper portion to the standard in connection withthe bearing attained by the pressure of the lower edge on the surface of the sofa entails firmness thereof irrespective of the degree of inclination said pillow may be adjusted to.

Whenever it may be preferred to have the clamping member afxcd in a stationary manner to a side strip or strips, and thus not removable With the pillow-carrying standard, l substantially merely so modify the clamping member in such a manner as to dispense IOO IIO

with the lateral pointed end or dog at end of rear plate thereof and providing screw-holes in that plate for the reception of screws s, penetrating into the side piece at its back, and thereby holding the clamp member in place and without defacement of the couch. In this connection, of course, the nuts on ends of the uprights of standard are dispensed with to permit desirable withdrawal of the standard from the stationary securingclamps. Obviously in my main construction of clamp member the plate having the dog may be of such length as to properly iit the frame, and probably this concurrently applies to my modiiied form just referred to.

One or a plurality of rests or pillows may be used and at any preferred points about the borders of the sofa-body and at varying or similar inclinations.

In Fig. l I illustrate one rest erected at an end as a rest for the head of a person in a recumbent position, while the other two, atv

different sides of the body and alternately located, so erected as to support the backs of two persons, such arrangement being known as tte-a-tte or conversationaL Vhen desirable, all the adj uncts-the pillows-may be temporarilyremoved, leaving a plain body with its four finished sides.

My rests may, as evident, be utilized for reclining backs to chairs and adj ustably, and are adaptable of usage in connection with overstuffed work as well as varnished work.

To sum up, my inventionfulfils the purposes designed for in a thorough and satisfactory manner.

I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, in a multiform lounge orsettee, of a body or seat, a I l-shaped clamping member connected to the frame of said body, and comprising a bottom plate and vertical side plates, sa-id portions surrounding a lower edge of said frame, an elongated orifice in the bottom plate, a clamping-screw workin g inwardly through the outer side plate and carrying a clamp or presser-plate, means provided to the inner side plate for positive engagement thereof with the interior face of the frame, a vertically-erected standard passing along the outer face of the frame and adapted to :rigid impingement therewith through pressure of the clamp-plate of the clamping-screw against said standard,a crossbar terminating the upper extremity of the standard, and a pillow pivotally and detachably mounted upon said cross-bar, all arranged and operating substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination, in a device of the class described, of a suitably-supported body or seat, a detachable clamping member secured provided to the inner wall for connection thereof with the bodys frame, a perpendicular standard passing between the outer face of the bodys frame and the outer wall of the clamping member and downwardly penetrating the aperturel in the bottom of the clamp member and adapted to longitudinal adjustment when released from impingementbythe clamp-plate of the clamping-screw, a crosspiece atv the upper end of the standard, and a pillow pivotally secured thereto, the lower edge whereof normally lies in abuttal with the upper surface of the body or seat, all arranged and operating substantially as described and for the purposes specified.

3. In a device of the class described, in combination, a body or seat suitably supported, a clamping member, of a shape, affixed to a lower edge of the frame of the body or seat and encompassing said part, an elongated standard extended along the outer face of the bodys frame and contactingly therewith, a pressure-screw erected in the clamping member and impingingthe standard, a cross-piece at the upstanding extremity of said stan dard, and a pillow fulcrumed on the cross-piece and pivotally adjustable thereon, said pillow being capable of bearing by its bottom edge upon the top of the body or seat, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the class described, a body or seat having a suitable frame, an angular standard upheld at a side of said body, a clamping member supporting the said standard, and consisting of a slotted bottom wall, 1

a frame impinging rear wall, a manipulatingscrew having a swiveled segment -shaped presser-plate located contiguous the frame, the angular standard passing closely between saidl plate and the bodys frame and extending downwardly through the slot in the bottom wall of the clamp member, and provided with a protuberance at its lower portion, a pillow pivotally and detachably united to the upper transverse length of the standard, said pillows bottom edge normally abutting thev upper face of the body or seat, all combined and operating substantially as described and shown.

5.
