COMBINA'IIQN CHAIR AND TABLE Application filed March 11, 1931.
This invention relates to improvements in furniture, particularly to a combination chair and table, and it is the principal ob ject of my invention to provide a chair one of the arm-rests of which has a compartment for the reception of a table top adapted to be folded into the compartment when not in use.
Another object of my invention is the provision of an arm chair one of the arm-rests of which is hollow and closed by a panel provided with locking means to loclrthe panel over the table when folded into the hollow arm-rest.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a combination chair and table of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, yet durable and efiicient in operation.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a combination arm chair and table equipped with a lever system allowing a convenient folding of the table into the arm rests of the chair and unfolding therefrom.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will appear as the description thereof proceeds and will then be specifically defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an armchair and table combined therewith and constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional View of a chairs arm-rest and table, the latter in its extended position.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 with the table collapsed.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the table on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional elevational view of the chair, arm rest, and table, the latter in its partly folded or collapsed position.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional elevational view of part of the arm-rest illustrating the locking of the side panel of the arm rest.
Serial No. 521,765.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view. taken along the line 77 on Fig. 1.
As shown, an arm chair of any suitable construction conventional type provided W with arm rests l0 and 11, back rest 12, seat Cw 13, frame 14 supported by feet 15, has formed in its arm rest 10 a chamber 16 closed against the outside by a lateral door or panel 17 having arigid frame hingedly attached at its lower edge, as at 18, to a bar 1 19 fixed to extend rigidly from side to side between the walls of the chamber 16 at its outer, lower corner.
The upper end of the panel carries a latch 20 engaging a keeper 21 formed with the f arm-rest to hold the panel in the door closing position.
A table top or plate 22 is slotted in its end edges near the outer ends thereof, as at 23 and in these slots travel pins 2 1 at the free 5 1 ends of a pair of links25, the other ends of which are .pivotally attached to lugs 26 fixed on the frame of the panel 17 and also carrying the outer ends of levers 27 to the inner ends of which are pivotally attached to lugs 6 28, on the chamber wall levers 29 having curved ends by means of whichthey are pivoted to lugs 30 on the underside of table 22.
Links 31, 32, are pivotally connected atiif their meeting ends, as at 38, and the free ends of links 31 are attached to bar 27 as .at3 l, while the corresponding free ends of links 32 are attached to lugs 35 by pins 36.
The frame of the panel 17 is supported 3 wnen extended by resting on bars 37 and 38, contacting the frame at their upper end and pivoted at their lower ends to the side walls of the chamber 16, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the seat 13 is provided with; springs 39 in frame 14,
The operation of my device will be clearly understood from the above description and having reference to the drawings, and it will be clear that the table may be ex-C9 tended by means of its supporting lever system by pulling the panel 17 outward and if not to be used the table can be conveniently folded into chamber 16 While the panel is locked in its position to close saidel chamber and to give the chair its usual appearance as such.
It will be understood that I have described and claimed the preferred form of my device only and that I may make such changes therein as come within the scope of the appended claims without departure from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combination chair and table comprising an arm-rest for the chair having a chamber therein, a bar extending between the side walls at the bottom of the chamber, a panel hinged at its lower edge to said bar, said panel adapted to close the chamber, a keeper on said arm-rest, a latch on said panel to engage said keeper, lugs on said panel, a table having lugs and slotted side members, links on said panel lugs carrying pins engaged in the table side slots, and a system of levers engaging said table lugs and said panel lugs with the inner surface of said chamber to allow folding the table into said chamber and extending it therefrom.
2. In a combination chair and side table, a chambered arm-rest for said chair, a foldable table top having elongated slots in its side edges, pins traveling in said slots, a panel having lugs and connected to the arm rest, links pivoted in said lugs at one end and carrying pins operable in the slots of the table top, a system of levers pivotally attached to said lugs at one end, and means for pivotally attaching the other ends of said lever system to said table and to the inner wall of the chamber in said arm-rest to allow folding of the table into said armrest and to extend therefrom.
3. In a combination chair and side table, a chambered arm-rest for said chair, a bar in the chamber of said arm-rest, a table top having slotted side edges, a panel hinged to said bar for closing said chamber on the outside, a latch on said panel, a keeper on said arm-rest for locking said panel in its chamber closing position, and a system of links and levers pivotally connecting said panel to the inner walls of said chamber and to said table, certain of said links having pins travelling in said slots whereby the table may be folded into the chamber of the armrest and extended therefrom.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOSEF KEICHER.
