Description

LEG AND FOOT REST Filed Aug. 25, 1950 Snvenfor 10:0 9. Rae/ ton}; 7m"- (Ittorneg Patented Sept. 4, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LEG AND FOOT REST Joseph A. Revercomb, Hinton, Va.
Application August 25, 1950, Serial No. 181,421
This invention relates to a leg and foot rest, sometimes referred to as an Ottoman, and more particularly to an article of this nature which is adjustable for use With chairs or seats of different heights.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved lower leg and foot rest.
,Another object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable leg and foot rest which is of pleasing appearance, comparatively simple of construction and yet highly efficient in operation and one which can be produced at a moderate cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description when read in the light of the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a prospective view illustrating the inventive concept.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view, the leg rest being shown in one of its sectional adjusted positions.
A is a rectangular shaped box like base made of wood, or other suitable material, and comprises a front wall I, side walls 2 and 3 and a view taken on the rear wall 4. The open base or box top is closed at its rear by a rigidly affixed cover piece 5 which is comparatively narrow. The remainder of the open top is covered or closed by a top piece 6 the rear end or edge of which is pivotally connected to the top piece 5 by a hinge I or the like. The tops of the pieces 5 and 6 are suitably padded as at 8 and 9.
The front top piece 6 has at its sides depending side walls or plates l0 and H and at its front a depending wall or plate l2. These walls or plates telescopically receive the side and front walls of the base.
An open wire frame B has its upper end pivotly connected to the underside of the top piece 6 at l3 and M and the side legs or arms 15 and I 6 of this frame are inter-connected by a bottom piece or leg IT. A pair of vertically extending rack bars I8 and H! are secured to the inner-face of the front wall I of the base and are disposed in spaced parallel relationship.
Spring 2!) has its upper end secured to the inner-face of the front wall 1 at a point 2| adjacent the top thereof and its lower end secured to the frame bottom leg I! at 22. This spring is under tension and tends normally to pull the 3 Claims. (Cl. 155169) 2 frame toward the racks l8 and H) to hold the cross bar I! of the frame in engagement with a pair of aligned slots in these racks and to thereby hold the top piece 6 down against the tension of the spring which through the frame B tends at all times to elevate the top piece 6.
A hinge C or the like, secured to the innerface of the base front, has a lower end 23 extending into a plane below the lowest position which can be assumed by the frame cross piece IT. A rod 24 secured at one end to the lower end 23 of the hinge extends through the base front I and is provided exteriorly thereof with an operating handle or knob 25.
For the purpose of providing a device of pleasing appearance the sides and front of the support are covered with suitable upholstery 26 which can, if desired, be such as to properly blend with the furnishings of a room or with the cover of a particular chair or other article of furniture.
To give longer life to the article it is thought desirable to cover the padding of the top pieces 5 and 6 with a suitable plastic material 21 and this material extends down over the side and front walls I0, I l and I2. Should it be desired upholstery matching the covering of the base could be used in place of the plastic material.
It is to be noted that the top part 5 is the foot rest and with the parts in the positions illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 the foot rest and leg rest are disposed in a horizontal plane. The plane of the foot rest 5 is slightly below the plane of the leg rest 6 and the front end of the foot rest is curved upwardly as at 28. This arrangement provides for comfortable reception of the heels of the user.
The operation of the device is extremely simple. The parts can be positioned as illustrated in Fig. 1 but should it be more comfortable to elevate the leg rest this is accomplished by pushing in on the knob 25 to disengage the frame B from the racks. When this is done, the spring 20 ordinarily elevates the front end of the leg rest and the degree of elevation is selective by causing the lower leg I! of the frame B to engage at a selected point along the lengths of the racks. The highest point of elevation of the leg rest is illustrated in Fig. 4. It will be seen that at any and all adjusted positions of the leg rest the side and front plates I0 close the space between the leg rest and the upper open end of the base.
Specific departure from the precise construction illustrated in the drawing can be made without departing from the inventive concept.
What I claim is:
1. A leg and foot rest for use in combination with a chair or the like comprising, a base having front, rear and side walls and an open top, a closure for base top comprising a horizontally disposed foot rest at the rear end of the top and a horizontally positionable leg rest at the front end of the base top, the foot rest being disposed in a horizontal plane below that of the leg rest, the leg rest being swingable about a horizontally disposed pivot to selectively elevate the front end of the rest, spaced vertically extending parallel racks on the inner face of the base front wall, an element pivotally connected with the leg rest and provided with a portion adapted to engage the racks, resilient means normally tending to elevate the leg rest and simultaneously engage the element portion with the racks, and means operable to disengage the element portion from the racks.
2. A leg and foot rest for use in combination with a chair or the like comprising, a base having vertically extending front, side and rear walls and an open top, a fixed horizontally disposed foot rest closing a rear portion of the open base top, a horizontally positionable leg rest closing the front and remaining portion of the open base top, the leg rest being disposed in a plane above the foot rest and having its rear end horizontally pivotally supported, the leg rest being provided with depending side and front plates telescopically receiving the side and front walls of the base, a pair of spaced vertically extending racks on the inner face of the base front wall, an open frame having an upper end pivotally connected to the underside of the leg rest and having a lower end adapted to engage the racks, resilient means interconnecting the base and the frame and tending normally to pull upwardly and forwardly on the frame to elevate the leg rest and move the lower end of the frame into engagement with the racks, and means exterior of the base and operable to disengage the lower end of the frame from the racks.
3. A construction as defined in claim 2, wherein, the means for bringing about disengagement of the frame with the racks comprises a hinge having a movable lower end disposed at the front side of the lower end of the rack, and an operating mechanism connected with the hinge and provided exterior of the front wall of the base with an operating handle.
