ADJUSTABLE GARMENT-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,578, dated September26, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER A. SWEENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Garment Holder or Hanger,

of which the followingis a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide means for hanging an entire suit of clothes at the same timein such manner that they will be kept smooth and free from creases, and retain their shape without the necessity of frequent pressing.

My invention is further designed to, and does, preserve the proper shape and spring of the trousers legs by insuring their being always folded and hung in the creases now customarily pressed in the front and back of the legs. These purposes are not attained by any form of holder heretofore known to me.

The holder is suspended by a hook, which is rigidly secured to the holder to prevent it from turning or twisting, and is also provided with an offset portion which receives the coat and vest collars and allows them to lie in their natural position without being chafed,

creased, crowded out of shape or rumpledl The holder is also provided with easily adjustable hooks or loop supports for the trousers, adapted to engage the two front and rear buttons, and insure the trousers hanging always fiat and in the proper folds to preserve their shape and smoothness. These hooks or loop supports are fixedly adjustable relatively to each other longitudinally of the holder, and thereby adapted to fit any size of waist-band,a most important requisite to the proper hanging of the trousers.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention,-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my newly invented holder, showing the proper manner of folding the trousers and elevation of the same. Fig. 10 is a section on line to w of Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a side elevation of a modification of my invention.

A represents the body of the holder, which may be made of any suitable material, and configuration. It may be provided with one or more vertical slots longitudinally placed near the ends of the body A. In the top of the body, at the upper edges of said slots (whether the slots are arranged singly, as in Figs. 8, 9, and 10, or in pairs as in Figs. 2, 7 and 11), are located, at suitable distances apart, notches or recesses a into which, for purposes of adjustment, the hooks or supporting-loops a are moved, to accommodate different sizes of waist-bands, and which serve to retain in fixed position the hooks when adjusted. The slots I indicate by the letter at, These slots further serve as a steadiment for the hooks or supporting loops. When the double slots are used the hooks are looped at their upper ends and are passed over and around that portion of the body A which lies between the slots. When the single slot is used the upper end of the hook is separated into two oppositely turned hooks which engage the notches a in the top of body of the holder, substantially as shown. The lower end of the hook is similarly formed to engage the two buttons on the waist-band of the trousers. In case a loop is used instead of the hook, it is preferably made in a double U-form, that it may similarly engage two buttons, with its depending portion. be similarly attached to the body of the holder, as explained in the case of the hook. I use only two of the hooks or loops, in order that the necessary adjustment may be readily obtained, and fixed.

It is further provided at its lower end with a V or Ushaped, or staple-like termination by means of which it is so secured to the body of the holder as to prevent it from turning or twisting when the garments are placed upon it and the whole is suspended from a hook or nail, thereby obviating a very objectionable feature common to all swivel hooks, or hooks with but a single point of attachment to the supported body.

In the modification shown in Fig. 11, the supporting hooks or loops 1) are adjustable fixedly in the notches at.

Other modifications will readily occur, such as substituting pegs or ridges for the notches shown and described; but I contend that they embody the essential principle of my invention.

' I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a garment holder,a bodyA,provided at each end with one or more vertical slots a, a, and the transverse notches 0t", arranged at the upper edges of said slots, combined with a suspending hook B, and depending hooks a, a, held in the said slots, and capable of adjustment relatively to each other in said notches, and adapted to engage respectively the tWo front and two rear buttons on the Waist-band of a pair of trousers, and thereby hang them folded in the shaping creases pressed in the front and back of the legs.

2. In a garment holder, a body A, provided at each end with one or more vertical slots at, a, and the transverse notches a", a", arranged at the upper edges of said slots, combined with the ofiset suspending hook B, provided with a bifurcated or staple-like termination whereby it is rigidly secured to the said body at two separated points, and thereby prevents the latter from twisting or turn- 111 5; In a garment holder, a body A, constructed of Wire, and provided with longitudinal vertical slots a, a, and the transverse notches a", a", and with the suspending loop B, combined with depending hooks a, a, held in said slots, and capable of adjustment relatively to each other in said notches, and adapted to engage respectively the two front and the two rear buttons on the waist-band of a pair of trousers, and thereby hang them folded in the shaping creases pressed in the frontand back of the trousers legs.
