GARMENT HANGER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 25, 1907.
NORA 15 V5 1 JOHN P. SUNDIN, OF ARGA TA, CALIFORNIA.
GARMENT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed March 25, 1907- s 364,323.
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. SUNDIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arcata, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented a new and useful Garment-Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in garment hangers, and it has for its object toiprovide a device of this character that is adapted to support a suit, that is to say, the coat and vest, and the trousers, in orderly condition, the device being capable of supporting the trousers either in their normal or an inverted position, as may be desired, the device being so constructed that it may be folded to adapt it for use in a suit case for traveling purposes.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment hanger constructed in accordance with my present invention. Figs. 2 and 3 show the different modes of attaching the trousers to the hanger in order that the latter may be suspended either in normal or inverted positions. Fig. 4 is a view of the hanger in folded condition. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the trousers attaching devices. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of one of the trousers attaching slides.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are indicated throughout by similar characters of reference.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the garment hanger embodies a coat form which is preferably jointed at an intermediate point to enable it to be folded into compact form for packing or traveling purposes, the form in the present instance embodying a pair of segmental members 1 and 2 having a curvature conforming to the shoulders of an average coat in order that they may receive the latter and support it in its proper form. These members are pivotally connected in the present instance by means of a hinge 3 of any desired form, which serves to connect their proximate ends, and into the lower edge of the member 1 is fitted a vertical portion 4 of a supporting hook 5, the latter being rotatable relatively to the members in order that it may fold closely between them when the members are in folded condition. It is preferable to provide suitable means for retaining the members in opened relation, the means provided for this purpose embodying, in the present instance, a hook 6 pivoted to the side of one of the members and arranged to cooperate with a I headed projection or screw 7 on the other member, the catch thus provided being arranged at that side of the form opposite to the hinge, and when thehook and pro jection are engaged, the members composing the coat form cannot be folded.
On the underside of the coat form toward each end are provided the guides 8 and 9, the latter being composed, in the present instance, of wire of suitable gage having one end fitted into a longitudinally extending aperture 10 in the end of the coat form, and having its opposite end turned upwardly and fitted into a transversely extending aperture 11, that portion of the guide between its attached ends being slightly spaced from the lower edge of the form. These guides are adapted to support the trousers suspending devices, and these devices, in the present instance, are each composed of a pair of loops l1 and 12 having relatively large openings at their tops to receive the head of the suspender button, the lower portion of the opening being reduced and adapted to receive the thread or other button fastening means, the reduced portion engaging behind the button to prevent its disengagement. These loops are employed for supporting the trousers in a position corresp nding to that position occupied by the trousers while being worn, and as they cooperate with the suspender button, it is unnecessary to employ clamping devices of any kind. These loops are preferably so supported that they may be swung in a vertical plane to clear those devices that are adapted to support the trousers by engaging their lower edges, these loops being supported, in the particular embodiment shown, by the rolled ends 13 and 14 formed by a strip of sheet material, these rolled portions embracing the upper journal portions 15 and 16 of the loops.
Intermediate portions of the strip are bent or doubled upon themselves to form a pair of loops 17l8, and journaled in these loops are the arms 1920 which carry the devices for engaging the lower ends of the trousers. The portion of the strip between the loops l9 and 20 is formed into a loop 21, and the latter is adapted to fit upon and operate longitudinally of their respective guides, sufiicient looseness being provided between the guide and the loop 21 as will produce a locking action between these parts when a force is applied at a distance from the slide engaging loop, although the devices may be adjusted freely longitudinally of the guide when the pressure is applied at a point adjacent to the loop 21. The strip of material, thus bent to provide pivotal connections for the loops that are directed outwardly from the opposite ends of the coat form to form pins or projections adapted to enter the lower end of the trouser leg and engage the material thereoi'at the inside, the enlargements and 26 serving to limit the movement of the'projections and thus prevent perforation of the material of the g nt- In usinga garment hanger constructed in accordance with my present invention, the trousers may be suspended in-a normal or an inverted position, the ordinary. suspender buttons being utilized when the trousers are to be supported in an upright position.
In this-case, the buttons are passed through the rela- 20.
-rowed portions of-the latter engaging the thread or tively'large openings in the'loops 11 and 12, the narother fastening of the button to prevent disengagement v of the latter, and while the suspender buttons are thus engaged by the supporting loops, the attaching devices 25 carrying'the loops are moved outwardly toward the ends -of the form in order that the garment may be fstretched to free it of wrinkles, the binding or clamping action between the attaching devices and their respective guides serving to retain the former in adjusted position.
When it is desirable to suspend the trousers in an inverted position, the pointed projections 23 and 24 are inserted into the lower edges of the trouser legs and engaged therewith at the' front and rear where the 35,
.engaged', the attaching devices are moved toward the usual crease'occurs, and while these devices are thus ends of the form, thereby stretching the trouser legs so that they may hang without folds, the attaching devices being'automatically locked in adjusted position 40- by the binding action between them and their respective guides.
While one or more pairs of trousers are thus suspended on the hanger, a coat or waistcoat, or both, may be hung over the coat 05m in the usual way, so that the hanger is capable of accommodating an entire suit of clothes.
When it is desirable to pack the hanger into a suit case, the catch 6 is disengaged irom its cooperating projection 7 and'the members composing the coat form may be folded about the pin into doubled relation,
4 and this shortens the length of the device by one half.
However, although it is generally preferable to employ a foldable form by reason of its compactness, it will be understood that the invention is not so limited, as the form may be composed of a single rigid member, and, moreover, the invention is capable of being applied to the ordinary coat hanger.
A garment hanger constructed in accordance with my present invention serves the dual purpose of a coat and trousers hanger, and the trousers attaching devices are so constructed that they are not only, adjustable in order that they may be correctly fitted to garments of seaase different sizes, but they are also capable of supporting the trousers in either a' natural or an inverted'position, and as these devices operate automatically to hold themselves at the proper adjusted position, the hanger may be manipulated with the greatest facility, which is more or less 'essential in a device of this character, and, moreover, the device may be manuiactured so cheaply that it can be sold at a reasonable price, as the relatively adjustable slides carrying the trousers attaching devices may be formed of sheet material by the use of dies.
