Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEFFERSON PEABODY, OF DIXMONT CENTRE, MAINE.
IMPROVED BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5l ,2 I 0, dated November 28, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON PEABODY, of Dixniont Centre, in the countv of Penobscot and State Of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Buckles; and I do hereby declare the saine to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of a buckle as provided with my invention and applied to a strap. Figs. 3 and 4 are end views Of the buckle.
ln the said drawings, A denotes 'the buckle traine or loop, which is in the form of a square box, having its ends and bottom removed.
The inner surface Ot' each side Of the frame has an inclined plane, a., projecting1 from it. On the two inclined planes a a a wedge, B, rests, such wedge being rough On its upper surface, or provided therewith with one orinore spurs, b b, or one Or more ridges, c c, extending upward from it. In rear ofthe larger end ofthe Wed ge is a bar, d, which goes across the interior of the frame and serves for the attachment of a strap, O, to the buckle, such strap under such circumstances being bent around the bar d and having the underlappin g portion c sewed Or stitched tO that part, j', which is near to it.
On drawing the tongue of the strap Or that of another strap through the buckle from the front to the rear of it, a back draft on the tongue, on release of the force exerted to dra-w it into or through the buckle, will pull the tongue against the spurs or rough Or projectin g parts of' the wedge and so engage the wedge with the strap as to cause the former to be drawn up the inclined planes'a a until it may have clamped the strap against the top part, h, ofthe frame. By pulling the tongue backward again and lifting it a little, it will be easy to disengage it from the wedge or its spurs so as to admit of the tongue seing drawn Outof the buckle.
I a in aware that an eccentric roller, provided with spurs, has been used in a buckletraine, and for the purpose of clamping a strap to the top of the said frame. Therefore, I do not cla-iin such.
What I claim as my invention is- The above specified buckle as in ade with one or more inclined planes, a, arranged in its frame, and with a wedge, B, tO rest and nieve on such plane or planes and with respect to the upper part of the buckle, substantially as described, the said wed ge being provided with One or more spurs or ridges to project from its upper surface, as explained.
JEFFERSON PEABODY.
