Description

UNITED STATES ADOLPH KOEHLEE, or HoLYoKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
HVIPROVVED SADDLE-TREE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent- No. 47,960, dated May 30, 1865.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH KOEHLER, of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Saddle-Tree for Harnesses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming'part of this specification, in whichlFigure l is a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line as x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a vertical section ofthe same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improved saddle-tree of that class which are constructed of cast metal; and it consists in casting the tree of such a form and securing the saddle and the hook to the same in such a manner that a perfectly smooth surface will be obtained at the under side of the tree, and the back of the horse prevented from being injured or j galled, as is now more or less the case on account of projectionssuch as nuts, bolts, &c.-extending below the under surface of the trees.
A represents the saddle-tree, which is cast in one piece and of V form, rounded at the angle or junction of its two inclined sides, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. At the under side of the tree, the rounded portion at the center or top of the same,` there is a recess, a, extending entrely across it and of equal width throughout its entire length. This recess a receives a plate, B, at the rear part of which is the loop Z, to receive the breeching-stnap, and the check-rein hook c is at the front end of the plate B, said hook extending upward and curving back over the Saddle C, as usual. (See Fig. l.) The saddle C 'is of the usual or any proper shape, and is secured on the upper central and rounded part of the tree by means of the screws D E, one, D, extending upward through plate B into the under side of the rear part ofthe saddle, and the other, E, extending down through the saddle from its upper surface and passing into plate B, but not projecting below it. The head of the screw D ts in a countersunk hole in the under side of plate B, and the latter is of such a thickness that its lower Surface will be lush with the under Side of the tree. Thus a smooth surface is obtained at the under side of the tree, there being no projecting surfaces to gall or injure the back of the horse. At the same time it will be seen that the hook, breechingloop, and saddle are all secured rmly in position by means of the two screws D E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- Casting the saddle-tree in one piece, with a recess, a, in its under side, in connection with the plate B, to fit in the recess a, and having the check-rein hook e at its front end, and the loop b,.to receive the breeching or back strap, at its rear end, and the two screws D E, to secure the saddle C and plate B to the tree, substantially as Set forth.
ADOLPH KOEHLER.
