Description
State of Illinois, have invented a Combined UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO JOHN BULLENE, JR., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION REIN AND BACK-STRAP HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,420, dated December 1:2, 1865 antedated November 29, 1865.
To all 'whom 'it may concern Be it known that LVJoHN BULLENE, Jr., of the city ot' Chicago, and county of Cook, and
Check-Rein and Back-Strap Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tofthe acoompanyin g drawings, and to the letters Vof reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section ot' my check-rein and back-strap holder, the plane ot' section being indicated by the line A A. Fig. 2 is atransverse section of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line B B. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view.
The object of my invention is to provide convenient means by which a check-rein can be secured in such a manner that a horse cannot loosen it, and at'the same time so attach the back-strap that the strain on the rein and back-strap will be nearly equal from the bit to the crupper.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
My invention consists, substantially, ot' the metallic plate C, to which all other parts are attached. At g, vertically through the plate C, is the rivet or screw-hole, by means of which the plate C is attached to the back-pad ot' the harness in the usual manner with a rivet or otherwise. At n, through the plate C, is the mortise through which the back-strap is put and secured. At E is the hook around which the check-rein is secured At f is attached the guard D, by means of a hinge or joint to n in t the plate C. Through the opposite end of the guard D from f is the loop or mortise through which the check-rein is passed before being put over the hook E, the guard D being susceptible of a partial revolution on the joint or hinge j'. This is easily done. J represents the check-rein when adjusted for use.
Operation: In order to use my invention, it
is trst necessary to secure the plate C to the back-pad of the harness by the method above described; then secure the back-strap to the end ot' the plate C ath, and then all that is necessary is to put the check-rein J, as represented, through the loop at the end ofthe guard D, and raise the guard D suiiicient to allow the check-rein to pass over the hook E, and the rein will then adjust itseltI and the guard D will hold the rein J securely upon the pa-rt E, so that no horse can get the rein loose without first breaking some part of the harness.
It is evident that my invention, in its operation, connects the cruppcr with the bit, because the crupper is usually attached to the backstrap, thus securing the object desired.
Having fully described my device, what l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by- Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The arrangement and combination ot' the part E and D with the loop or part h, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN BULLENE, JR.
