SADDLE.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that 1, L. P. AUGUSTE LEURS, of Leige, in the Kingdom ot'Belgium, have invented a new and Improved BidingSaddle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which* Figure l represents a sectional side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view ot the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the same, the line x at, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of saddles which are provided with self-adjusting pads, so that the same adapt themselves readily to the motions ot' a horse or to the changes in the shape or form ot' its body.
The nature of theinvention audits peculiar advantages will be understood from the following description:
A represents the saddletree, which consists of two distinct side pieces, made of wood or any other suitable material, and connected in front by the bow B and in the rear by the cantle G. Both the bow and the cantle are made of malleable iron, and the bow B is provided with a brace, b, and the cantle O with a brace, o, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and they are also provided with flanges b c, to admit two or more screwvbolts, d, on each side bar. The flanges and braces are cast solid with the bow and cantle, and a strong, durable, and cheap saddle-tree can thus be produced.
The saddle bears upon the horses backs by means of four adjustbble pads, D E, two Iin front and two in the rear. These pads are suspended from the side bars by means of straps e, and they are provided on their upper surlaces with recesses f, to receive the swivelprops g le.. These props are made of wood or any other suitable material, and they are connected to the side bars of `the saddle-tree by means of pins l, which may be loosely inserted in the under side of said side bars.
The props g of the front pads, I), are spherical, and the props h of the rear pads are semicyliudrical, so that the front pads are allowed to move freely in either direction, and the rear pads can accommodateI themselves to the side motions of the horse.
By combining the straps e with thetpads and swivel props the pads I) and E are readily attached to the side bars ofthe tree, and they can freely be adjusted, or made loose or fast, according to convenience. If the straps are loose, the pads have greater freedom of motion then when the straps are drawn up tight, and the pads will under all circumstances readily accommodate themselves to the back ot' the horse'and to its motions.
This saddle is very cheap in its construction. All its parts are so arranged that they are not liable to get out of order, and it is exceedingly easy and comfortable for horse and rider.
I do not claim, broadly, as my invention the application ofseltadjusting props or pads to a saddle, as such have been previously used; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the adjusting-straps e with the props g h, pads D E, and side bars of the saddle-tree A, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. The malleableiron bow and cantle B C, with braces b c, and flanges b c', in combination with the saddle tree A, constructed and operating in the manner set forth.
