Be it known that l, ANDREW J. CnoNK, of the city and county of Peoria, have inrented a new and improved Pad-Tree; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of' the construction and operation of the seme, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in nliich I Figure 1 yis a. top iiew of my'improved pad-tree.

und combined with `the bridge by means of screws and the terrets, to give greater strength and soldity to the tree;'also constructing the Ds on the ends 'of the'bridge to receive the back-straps, instead of on 'the pad-iron, as heretofore, to sustain in -a rncres'ubstnntinl and durable manner the weightcf the sha-fte.

To enable any one skilled inthe art to make and use my invention, I will proceed toV describeits constructionand operation. f Y

A is the pad-iron, cast with bnrs .or nuts a a, B the bridge or bow, C C the Ds for back-straps, D D the terrets, E E the screws. The bridge is made inthe usual form, exceptthat their ends ure constructed with'Ds The vterrets areas ordinarily. A padding of leather, F F, is suitably secured around the iron, and compacted between theburs even with their top edges. (See figs.' 2 eind Suitable springsmay be used in connection with the padding, it' desired. Thle bridge is secured to theirons in the pads by the terrets, and screws being introduced through holes in the suine and .screwed into the 'Durs until the bridge is made fast to the irons, (see igs. 2 and 3,) thusforming a complete and solidfpadftree. :Afa heretofore emarke'd, the Ds for the back-straps are generallyconstructod on the ends of the pad-irons, which, bengof a thin plate form, and the manner in which theyare connected with the bridge, are not likely to be as strong as on the ends of the bridge for sustaining theireight of the shafts. The tree is only stationary betweenv the tcrrets, andby a proper adjustment of the padding around the irons canvbe generally made to fit the back of any horse.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claini therein as new, and desire tofsecure by liietters` Patent, is t 4 u l 1. The pad-iron, as constructed and'combined with the bridge, substantially in'the manner and for the purpose as herein set forth.
