Description

WILLIAM MCKERAHAN, OF ALLEGHENY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA REYNOLDS, OF THE SAME PLAGE.
Leners Parmi No. $6,852, dazed Fama/ry 9, 1869.
w mROV'ED BACK-E HOOK.
Tha Schedule mfened to in these Letters Patent and making part of the seme. m
To all 'whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MCKERAHAN, of the city :md county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Back-Bund Hook for Harness, being a new article of manufacture; end I do hereby declare that the iollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', rolex-ence being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the lettersotl reference marked thereon.
lhe nature oi' niy'inventon consists in so constructing a hook for the batck-band of harness, -that it Cau be enst without the necessity of coring out, in making the moulds i'or casting it, thereby furnishing a new and cheap article ot' manufacture.
,lo eintble others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. A
ln the acmnnpanyiug drawings, which form part of my specificationliigure l is n. ii'ont viewo` my improvement in hooks fnwimck-bands for harness, representing the hook arranged on a section of' a back-band.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of' the same, when out through at line y oflig. 1.
vFigure 3 is a longitudinal section of the hook, when disconnected l'ronl the back-bend.
A4 is a i'rannc oi' the hook. O is the tongue, the point, I), of' which is curved down, so as to be below the outsidc surface ofthe frame A.
lhe frame A is provided with an opening, B, the form ot' which is clem'ly shown in the accompanying drawings. By making this opening, B, the space un-V der thc tongue O is made by the line of parting iu the mould, between the cope' and dra-g of the flask, which terms are well understood by ironnnoulders Through the medium of this opening B, the. space under the tongue C is formed without the necesslty Of Cores beiugused in formingmoulds for casting the hook, for
these hooks are cast, and then annealed; that is to say, the hooks are known in commerce as malleableiron hardware for harness.
The bacleband hook is riveted to the back-band P, in the position represented in fig. 1, and when placed on the under strap, girth, or bell -band, it is placedin the position represented by'thc dotted Alines X iig. l. The links represented by the dotted. lines show the mode of connection between the said two parts of the harness. y
The opening O, in the back band If', is for giving room for passing the link over the curved end D 0f the tongue 0.
The advantage of my improvement consists in the facility and ease of moulding the hook, saving the co1ing-process, and making alight and cheap backband hook. 4
Having thus described the nature and construction of my improvement,
What I claim as of my invention, is
A new article of manufacture, viz, a back-band hook,
consisting of frame A, with opening B, and the tongue O, cast to and on the frame A, as herein described, and
for the purpose set forth.
