ABRAHAM AV. SARGEANT, OF SYRACUSEBNEW YORK..
Lettes'Patent No. 90,878,4Zatcd .Tune 1, 1869,
IMPROVED BUCKLE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making -part of the same.
To all whom it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM VLSARGEANT, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement .in Buckles; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the.
same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whichform part of this specification, and in which Figure'l represents a perspective view of a tracebu'ckle, constructed according to my invention, and
Figure 2, a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures.
This invention, though more especially designed for harness-buckles, may also be applicable to buckles of other kinds; and
It consists in abuckle 'having its tongue carried upon and combined with an eccentric hinge, or pivoted upon the centre-bar, whereby convenience ot' manipulation is gained without detracting from the efciency of the buckle, andA whereby the trace or other strap which is buckled thereiuis clamped and held by the said eccentric, in connection with the tongue, with a degree of force proportionate to the strain to which it is subjected, thereby1 lessening liability-of thebreaking or bending of the tongue, or of the tearing out of the hole in the said trace or strap, by thus relieving said parts of much of the strain to which, with buckles of ordinary construction, they are necessarily subjected.
Referring to the accompanying drawings- A is the frame of the buckle, constructed substantially as other buckle-frames. j
B is an eccentric pivoted upon the centre-bara of the frame, and carrying upon it the tongue f, in the roanne-r as shown, so that it may readily engage with the tongue-holes of the trace or strap, as the vsame is slipped through the buckle in one direction, and as readily disengage therefrom, when the said trace or` strap is slipped in the opposite direction. Saideccentric B is made in the form as represented in the drawings, or other suitable form, so that, when the tongue f is drawn back by the strain exerted on the trace, or other strap with which it may be engaged, the said eccentric will be drawn outwardly or toward the innerrsurface of the bridge c of the frame. By this means, the said trace or strap is jammed and held between the said eccentric and the bridge e, ator near its point of engagement with the tongue f, thereby relieving the said tongue f of much of the strain to which it is otherwise subjected.
l What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, is
The'buckle A, having its tongue f carried upon and, combined with an eccentric, B, hinged or pivoted upon the centrebar, in such manner that the draught upon the tongue shall cause the eccentric to bite upon the strap, substantially as herein shown and described.` ABRAHAM V. SARGEANT. Witnesses l HENRY C. BANKS, WILLIAM S. STAN.
