Description

E. WILSON.
Hold-Back;
Patented Nov 6, 1866.
' Invert/fir,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD WILSON, OF NORTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOLDBACKS FOR CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,494, dated November 6, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILsoN, of Northbridge, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks for (Jarriages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in such combination of parts and form of construction that it may be easily adjusted to the thill or shaft, and shall retain the strap from accidental displacement, and yet allow the strap to be easily removed when occasion requires.
In said drawings, Figure l is a side View, showing the holdback anda part of the shaft.
- Fig. 2 is an end View with a section of the shaft at I.
The same letters indicate the same parts in each.
G is the shaft; A, the loop or clasp, clasping round G, as shown in Fig. 2, where I is a section of G. L is the hook for the strap,
with a brace, F, and a knob or catch, B, in front below the opening, to prevent the sag of the strap from accidentally unfastening it, the lower edge of the strap being retained in place by B. The under or opposite side of the clasp A is cut open, and the lips D are made as shown in Fig. 2, through which the screw 0 passes, or its equivalent, to clasp the Whole tightly to the shaft. Small points may be made on the inside, and a screw inserted at F, if deemed best.
The operation is deemed sufficiently described in the above.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The clasp A, when adjustable, in combination with the hook L and knob B, when constructed and operating in the manner and for the purposes above set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD WILSON.
Witnesses:
PAUL WING, HENRY I. WILsoN.
