EN D-GATE FOR WAGONS.

SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 290,374, dated December 18, 1883,

.To @ZZ whom, it may con/cern Be it known that I, JOHN I. WARE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in. the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a Apart of this specication.

My invention relates to end-gates for wagon and other vehicle bodies; and it consists in the improved construction, hereinafter fully. described, whereby devices of the character to which my invention appertains are greatly improved and vstrengthened in construction and their durability augmented.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of a wagonbody having my improvements .embodied therein, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.

A represents the bottom, and B G the sides, of the wagon-body. Guard-plates D 'E are bolted to the exterior faces of the sides B O, near the ends a b thereof, and are bent around the said ends a b, and bear against the inner faces of the said sides for a short distance, and are then turned abruptlyat right angles therefrom, so as to form ribs c d. Two vertical series of bolts, ef, are used in securing each of the guard-plates D E, the bolts e passing through each plate near the ends of the sides, and through the sides themselves, and then through the portions of the plates which bear against the inner faces of the sides, where the bolts are retained by means of nuts, or the heads are riveted. The series of bolts f pass through each of the plates D E, near the edge of the portion thereof which bears on the eX- terior faces of the sides, as shown, and they then pass through the sides and through vertical cleats G H, and arethen fastened by nuts or by being riveted. Metal standards I J have their upper portions, g, flattened and perforated to bear against and be secured by bolts to the inner sides of the plates D E, the lower portions of said standards being reduced and cylindrical to form necks or shanks 'i z', which pass through perforations therefor in the bottom of the body, and through the cross-bar K, located transversely on the under side of the end thereof, and are rigidly secured by threaded nuts k engaging the threaded extremities of the necks. Within the space formed between the ribs c d of the plates D E and the cleats GH vertically plays an end-gate, L, the rear face of which is provided at each side thereof` with metallic plates M N, which are secured thereto by any suitable means, and each of which has its inner side bent at right angles from the rear face of the end-gate L; to form ears m n, which are parallel with the sides of the wagon-body. A tie-rod, O, passes through perforations otherefor in the sides of the wagonbody, and also through the plates which embrace the same, and also through perforations p, formed in the ears m n of the endfgate plates M N, thus securely locking the gate rigidly and firmly in position.

- From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the plates used in forming the necessary parts of the end-gate-securing devices are so disposed as to not only secure a firm bearing for themselves, but to protect the sides and ends of the wagonbody from wear or abrasion; that the standards I J not only serve to connect the cross-bar rigidly beneath the bottom of the wagon-body, but rigidly hold the sides with their guard-plates against any vertical strain, and that those parts of the endgate which would bear against the ribs c d of the guard-plates and become worn are prevented from so doing by the plates M N, secured-to the end-gate, which also provide the ears for the tie-rod to pass through.

I claim- The combination, in an end-gate, of the guard-plates D E, embracing a portion of the inner andouter sides of the wagon-body, and also the ends thereof, and having ribs c d and cleats G H, standards I J, connecting the sides and guard-plates to the bottom, as described, and an end-gate Vprovided with plates M N, having perforated ears m n, and a tie-rod passing through the guard-plates and sides and through the perforated ears, substantially as set forth.
