PATENT QEEIcE.
JAY B. TREMAINE, OF IUKA, KANSAS.
WAGON-BODY,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 786,695, dated April 4, 1905.
Application filed July 5,1904. Serial No. 215,350.
To (all 11/71/0722 it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAY B. TREMAINE, a citi-. zen of the United States, residing at Iuka, in the county of Pratt and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to-wagon-bodies, and more particularly to that class of devices of this character having removable side-boards.
The object of the invention is to provide a detachable side-board which is integral with a portion of the bottom of the vehicle-body, thereby preventing the escape under the sideboard of grain or other like material which may be contained within the wagon.
A further object is to so construct the sideboard as to prevent rattling thereof when the vehicle is in motion.
ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of side-boards which are formed at the outer edges of the side sections of the bottom of the wagon-body. These side-boards are enlarged adjacent their lower portions, so that the parts are strengthened where the greatest strain is produced, and the sections of the bottom from which they eX- tend are removable with them. These bottom sections are so constructed as to permit the intermediate portion of the bottom of the body to be detachably secured to them.
The invention further consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, which show the preferred form of my invention, Figure 1 is a transverse section through a wagonbody having side-boards constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of one of the sideboards.
Referringto the figures by numerals of reference, 1 and 2 are the side sections of the bottom of a vehicle-body, and these sections are enlarged in thickness at their outer edges and extend longitudinally of the vehicle-body. The enlarged depending portion 3 of each section has notches 4 therein adapted to receive a bolster 5, on which the vehicle-body rests. Side-boards 6 extend upward from the outer edges of the sections 1 and 2 and are formed with or secured permanently to said sections. These side-boards are enlarged in thickness at their lower edges, the enlargements Tthereof merging into the enlarged portions 3 of the sections 1 and 2. The inner edge of the section 2 is grooved longitudinally, as shown at 8, for the reception of a head 9, arranged at one edge of the intermediate portion 10 of the bottom of the vehicle-body, and the inner edge of section 1 has a head 11 thereon, which is adapted to fit within a groove 12, formed in the other edge of the intermediate portion 10. The end-boards 13 of the body are adapted to fit between cleats 14, arranged upon the inner faces of side-boards 6 and sections 1 and 2.
By constructing a wagon-body in the manner herein described the side-boards are readily removable; but they are at the same time held firmly in position and will not rattle when the vehicle is in motion or become displaced. With the ordinary form of side-board a great leakage of grain, &c., often occurs between the lower edge thereof and the bottom of the wagon-body; but with this construction such a loss is impossible, as the side-boards are permanently secured to the side sections of the UUUu s, and the balance of said vehicle-bottom is secured to these sections in such a manner as to prevent leakage.
in the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as i am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a vehicle-body, the combination with side sections having recessed enlarged portions for engagement with a bolster, and an intermediate section engaging the side sections side-boards formed with the side sections of 16 all of said sections forming the bottom oi the the bottom and having enlarged lower porbody. tions.
2. The combination with the bolster of 21 In testimony WhereofI aifixmy signature in 5 vehicle; of side sectionshevingdepending enpresence of two Witnesses.
lerg'ed portions notched to receive the bolster, JAY B. TREMAENE. an intermediate section upon the bolster and -W1tnesses: engaging the side sections, allot said sections EARNEST L. SHAW,
forming the bottom of the vehicle-body, and Juice 0. SHRAOK.
