UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HOWARD LYFORD, OF MANLY, IOWA.
END-GATE ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,890, dated March 31, 1903.
' Application filed December 22, 1902. Serial No. 136,177. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN HOWARD LYFORD, a citizen of the United statespresiding at Manly, in the county of Worth and State of Iowa, have invented certain "new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Rods,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
, This invention relates to an improvement in end-gate rods, and more particularly to the means employed to secure them in place. In the drawings, wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is shown, and in which like letters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective view of the rear portion of a wagon-body with my improved end-gate rod secured thereon. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the wagon-box, taken through the end-gate rod and its bearings; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of the bearings for the end-gate rod.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A is a wagon-box having the usual bed B, side-boards C G, cleats D D, and endboard E. The end-gate isheld in position by the said gaterod F, which passes loosely through the bearing G on the sideboard D and screws into the bearing H on the other side-board. The end-gale rod is provided with the usual handle or eyefon one' end and a screwthreaded portion f on the other end. The bearing G, as is'better shown in Fig. 3, consists of the two members I and J. The member I consists of the bolt i, having the thin washer-like head L. The head L is in the form of a circle, with a segment of the same cut away to form a straight portion Z, for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly described. The member I is provided with an opening centrally disposed, which ex- 7 tends through the head and body of the bolt 2'. This opening is slightly larger in diameter than the end-gate rod. The head L-is also provided with an aperture m near its outer edge. The bolt i has on its outer surface, extending a short distance from the head L, one or more feathers i and has its outer end screw-threaded, as at 2, for the reception of the member J of the bearing. The member J is a thin washer, circular in form, having a centrally-disposed screw-threaded aperture 9'.
of exactly the same construction as the bear ing G,except that the centrally-disposedopem I ing N extending'therethrough is of the same diameter as the end-gate rod F and isinternally screw-threaded to receive the screw threaded end f of the end-gate rod F,
Having now described the construction of the several parts of my invention, I will now describe the method of securing them to the wagon-box. Holes are first bored through the side-boards B B at the points where the bearings are to be secured. These holes should be in alinement and should be slightly smallerin diameter than the bolts t. The members I of the bearings are then driven through said holes, with the straight portions Z of the heads L lying along the inner edge of the cleats D D. The members J are then screwed onto the projecting ends of the members I, thus clamping the side-board firmly between the two members.. The parts are so arranged that when the two members I and J-are adjusted to the desired position the aperturesm and o in the heads of the two members will be in alinement. Bolts r are then passed through the holes m and o and the interposed side-board C and riveted or otherwise secured, thus securely locking the two members I and J in their adjusted positions. I prefer to countersink the heads of the hearings in the sideshown in the drawings, as it is obvious that many minor changes might be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the-invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with an end-gate rod, of bearings for said rod adapted to be secured to the side-boards of a wagon, each of said bearings comprising an apertured, bolt ar-.
boards and meansfor locking said out and the head of said bolt together; substantially as described.
2. The combination with an end-gate rod of bearings for said rod adapted to be secured to the side-board of a wagon, each of said hearings comprising an apertured bolt arranged to pass through the side-boards, means on said bolt to prevent it from turning, a nut on said bolt on the other side of said sideboards and means for locking said nut and the head of said bolt together; substantially as described.
3. The combination with an end-gate rod of bearings for said rod adapted to besecured to the side-board of a wagon, each of said bearings comprising an apertured bolt arranged to pass through the side-boards, a nut on said bolt on the other side of said sideboards and means for locking said nut and the head of said bolt together, the aperture in one of said bolts being larger in diameter than the end-gate rod, and the aperture in the other bolt being screw-threaded to engage with the screw-threaded end of the end-gate rod; substantially as described.
4. The combination with an end-gate rod of bearings for said rod adapted to be secured to the side-boards of a wagon, each of said bearings comprising an apertured bolt pass ing through one of said side-boards, a nut on said bolt on the other side of said side-board, alined openings in the head of the bolt and in the nut, and a locking-bolt passing through said alined openings and the interposed sideboard; substantially as described.
5. The combination with an end-gate rod of bearings for said rod adapted to be secured to the side-boards of a wagon, each of said bearings comprising an apertured bolt passing through one of said side-boards, a nut on said bolt on the other side of said side-board, alined openings in the head of the bolt and in the nut, and a locking-bolt passing through said alined openings and the interposed sideboard, the aperture in one of said bolts being larger in diameter than the end-gate rod and the aperture in the other bolt being screwthreaded to engage with the screw-threaded end of the end-gate rod; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HOWARD LYFORD.
