UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
MORRIS S. TYLER, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE CAPITAL W'AGON COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
END-GATE FOR 'WAGONS.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,971 dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed September .23, 186. Serial No. 214,346. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, MORRIS S. TYLER, of Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagons; and I'do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in end-gates for wagons; and the invention consists in providing an endgate of known construction wit-h an independently-movable section so arranged that it answers all purposes for which movable endgates are ordinarily designed; and the invention further consists in the peculiar construe tion, arrangement, and combination of th parts, as hereinafter described. a
In the drawings which accompany this specification, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved end-gate. Fig. 2 is a plan showing the movable section of the endgate in a partlyopened position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view with the movable section of the end-gate entirely removed. Fig. 4 is a horizontal crosssection on the line 00 x in Fig. 1.
A are the sides, B the bottom, and O the rear end-gate, of an ordinary wagon-box. The endgate O is removably secured to the wagonbOX by engaging into suitable mortises formed on the inner face of the side-boards, and is held in position by the rod D, all arranged in a manner well known in the construction of such end-gates.
Myinvention consists in providing said endgate with the independently-movable section E, which forms all the lower portion of said end-gate, with the exception of a small portion, F, at one end, which is left connected with the top portion, I, of the end-gate. This portion is provided with a rabbet, G, formed by securing the cleat H thereto, or in any other desired manner, and by means of asuitable fastening-sueh as the fastening J, shown in the drawings-the movable section E of the end-board is secured in position, so that whenever it is desired to remove it for unloading farm produce from the wagon it may be done by simply opening the fastening and pulling the section E out of the mortise into the sideboard, into which its opposite end is engaged. To facilitate this operation, the section E is provided with a suitable hand-hold-such as the one marked Lprovided by cutting away a portion of the cleat K.
It will be seen that the ordinary style of endgate, whether removably secured or not, may be easily provided with such a movable section by simply cutting the gate, as shown, and providing it with the rabbet G and fastening J.
In manufacturing my end-gate I preferably make the standing portion F an integral part of the cleat H, as it makes the gate somewhat stronger on account of the grain of the wood running vertically. In that case the rabbet G is then formed on the cleat H, which latter must be strongly bolted to the top rail, I, of the end-gate.
I am aware that an end-gate for wagons has been made wit-h a slide moving in the direction of the length of the gate and fitting in between cleats on the side of the wagon-box, and provided with springs and locking means, and disclaim such construction. I dispense with the springs necessary in the above construction, so that the ordinary style of end gate may be easily provided with myimprovement- WVhat I claim as my invention is- 1. An end-gate provided with an independently-movable section, said section forming the lower portion of the end-gate, with the exception of a small standing portion atone end integral with said gate, all arranged substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the end-gate O and vertical portion F, formed integral therewith, of the independently-movable section E, cleat H on said vertical portion forming a rabbet, G, and a fastening, J, for securing the section E to said portion F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
