(No Model.) 0. O MILLER & J W. ROWE.
END GATE. No. 441,575. Patented Nov. 25, 1890.
- mum 55 FIZZ E8838 UNITED STATES CHRISTOPHER C. MILLER,
PATENT O FICE.
OF RICHLAND, AND JOHN w. ROWE, or MAR- TINSVILLE, ILLINOIS.
END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,575, dated November 25, 1890.
Application filed July 10, 1890- Serial No. 358,305- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHRISTOPHER 0. MIL- LER, of Richland, in the county of Pulaski, and JOHN W. ROWE, of Martinsville, in the county of Clark and State of Illinois, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for Wagons; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to end-gates for wagon-beds; and it consists in the new and improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts of a combined end-gate and scoop-board which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective rear view of a wagon provided with our invention, showing the endgate closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the gate opened. Fig. 3 is a perspective rear view showing the gate suspended on top of the wagon-bed, thereby leaving the end of the bed open. Fig. 4 is a detail View, on an enlarged scale, of one of the spring-clamps; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the side wings of the end-gate.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A indicates the end-gate proper, which may be of wood or other suitable material, to the ends of which are secured the segmental side wings B B, which are preferably made of metal. These side wings are formed near their lower rear corners withthe open slots B, in which fit pins 0 0, extending out from the projecting rear end of the wagon-bottom. The wings are preferably re-enforced at the point where they are slotted to give them increased strength, thickness, and durability by the reenforcing plates 1), as shown.
The end-gate receives additional support from the projecting rear end of the bottom of the wagon-bed.
To the rear ends of the side-boards of the wagon-body are secured the spring-clamps D, the free ends of which are provided with the conical points or projections E, extending inward, as shown, and adapted to engage with openings F, formed in the Wings B near their curved edge, springing or passing through the said openings into registering openings W in the ends of the sides W of the wagon-body. Itwill be seen that by this construction, when the end-gate is closed, as in Fig. 1, the coneshaped pins E will pass through the upper openings F of the side wings, and will thus hold the end-gate locked in its closed position, while, when the gate is opened, as shown in Fig. 2, the cone-pins willpass through the lower openings F of the side Wings, and
thus hold the gate in its open position to serve as a scoop-board. When the cone-pins of the spring-clamps are in the lower holes, the gate can be turned up over the end of the wagonbody and suspended on top of the same, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thus leaving the rear end of the wagon-body entirely open.
To prevent brush or cornstalks from wedging between the sides lV of the wagon-bed and the side wings B B, we have provided curved metal guards G, which project over the curved edges of the side wings when the gate is closed, as seenin Fig. '1.
The gate may be used with or without sideboards S, and in either case may be used as a scoop-board. When the side-boards are used, an end-board I, of the same width as the side-boards S, is secured on the gate by slats 't', fitting into staples t" on the gate, hooks 10 being secured to the rear ends of'the sideboards S, which hook into eyes i secured in the ends of the end-board 1.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to'secure by Letters Patcut, is-
and the curved guards G, substantially as set slats i, and having the eyes 2' secured in its IO forth. ends, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the end-gate having In testimony whereof we aflix our-signatures the side wings B formed with the openings F in presence of two witnesses.
and the open slots 13', and having the staples CHRISTOPHER O. MILLER. 'i', the supporting-pins O, the spring-clamps JOHN WV. ROWE.
having the cone-pins at their free ends, the \Vitnesses:
side-boards S, having the hooks 102 at their CHARLES SHAWVER,
rear ends, and the end-hoard I, having the XV. E. IIUTCI-IINGS.
