PLATFORM-GEAR FOR WAGONS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,960, dated November 1, 1881.

To alt whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARQUIS W. STEVENS, of Linden, iu the county of Genesee and State ot' Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Wagons, of which the following is a specilication. y

The nature of my invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments to platform-gears for wagons by means io ot' which a greater flexibility of the wagon is obtained, so that as one of the wheels passes over an obstruction the Wagon-body will not be tilted with the elevation ot' one end ofthe axle, but will preserve its position parallel with the plane of the earth.

My invention, therefore, consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and operation of devices, by means of which and the circle of a platform-gear the above-mentioned 2o result will be obtained.

Figure l is a perspective view of the circle formed on top of platform-gears with my improved radially-sliding head-blocks attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ot" the arched slide-base of my improved head-block detached. Fig. 3 is a like view of my capslide detached. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of thesame, showing nlsothe means of connecting it to a wagon. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section ofthe same.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this speciiication, A represents the circle or ijfth-wheel, always forming part ot' the platform-gear ot' a Wagon. To the top of this circle, at equal distances fore and at't of the center thereof, I secure the metallic arches B, which form the base-slides ot' my improved head-blocks. flanges b, one on each side, to embrace the sides ofthe arches. The tops ofthe slides are recessed, the bottom of the recess having a curve of the same radius above mentioned and a rectangular slot, c, through which and the arch a bolt, d, passes to hold the arches and cap-slides in their relative position Without interferingwith the free lateral and radial move- 5o ment of the latter upon the former.

It will readily7 be seen that by the employment of these slides the elevation ot' one end ofthe axle will not tilt the 6o wagon-box resting upon the slides, as the tendency in this direction is counteracted by the sliding radial movement of the cap-slides.

One of these arches and cap-slides may be employed, with splendid effect, as the headblock of a Wagon with elliptic springs.
