EUGENE F. CHAPMAN, OF WVIL SON, NEBRASKA.
WAGON-BOX..
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 269,009, dated December 12, 1882.
' Application filedJuly 3,1882. (Nomodel) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE FLCHAPMAN, of Wilson, in the county of Oolt'ax and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the end-boards of Wagon-boxes, and to, the means for attaching them to the box and holding them in place for closing the ends of the box; also to separate side and end boards for enlarging the wagon-box.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
ted lines suspended under the box; and Fig. 4
is a perspective view, showing my improved side and end board for enlarging the box in place. 7
Arepresents the wagon-box; B, the forward end-board, and O the rear end-board of the box, and D 1) represent the bent rods or bails of iron, by'which the boards are attached to the box.
The rear end-board, O, is attached to the bail D by means of the eye-plates ff, secured to the outside of the end-board near its ends, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the eyes ff of the said eye-plates being at or near the top or upper edge of the board. When this means of attachment of the end-board to the bail isused for locking the end-board in the end of the box, I prefer to use the sliding spring-bolts i, which are adapted to pass through the holes 0 in the side plates, 9. These bolts are operated by the arms i, secured at right angles to the bolts, and which protrude from the slots 6 in the plates h, secured to the outside-of the endboard over suitable recesses cut in the board for the reception and movement of the said sliding bolts 13,
over the bail, channels or ways will be formed in which the bailis adapted to be moved, or for admitting the end-board to be moved upon the bail; \Vhen this means of attachment of the end-board to the bail is used for locking the end-board in the box, I provide the box A with the hooks b b, behind which the lower corners of the board are placed, and provide the cleats E E, near the upper ends of the recesses a a, with the bolts or screws 0 c, which i are adapted to reach into the recesses for locking the bail at the upper end of the channels or ways, as shown in- Fig. 1. With the bail locked in this elevated position and the lower corners of the board placed behind the books I) b, the board will be held securely in place, closing the end of the box.
Upon withdrawingthe spring-bolts or screws 0 c the board B may be tipped forward to the inclined position shown in Fig. 2, or it may be swung upward and placed in a horizontal position upon the upper edges of the box and used for a seat, or swung downward under the box and placed upon the hounds or thills ofthe wagon out of the way. When the board is swung upward and placed upon the box for a seat it will be observed that the outside of the board will be uppermost, and will thus always present a clean surface.
The rear end-board, 0, when the boltsi are withdrawn from the holes 6, may he dropped down to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, out of the way; or it may be swung outward and upward and placed in a horizontal position upon the upper edges of the box, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3, and used as a seat.
Instead of attaching the rear end-board, C, to the bail D, as shown and described, by means of the eye-plates f f, the same might be attached in the same manner that the forward board, B, is attached to the bail D, so that both will be alike; but the plan shown is pre- LII ferrcd, since the forward board may be extended upward, as shown, to form adash-board to thebox when the side and end boards for enlarg ing the box are not used. When these are used for enlarging the box the upward extension serves the forward end-gate, as will be understood from Fig. 4.
G G are the separate side-boards for enlarging the box, and H is the separate rear end-gate of the extension. The end-gate H is provided with the hooked platesl l, which are adapted to book under the bail D, and is formed with the projections m m, and provided at or near its upper edge with the bent and hooked rod K, the hook portions 70 7c of which are adapted to be booked in the eyes or staples n n in the side-boards G G, as shown in Fig.4. The side-boards G G are provided upon opposite sides with fixed standards or cleats q s, which reach down over theinner and outer faces of sides A to hold boards G thereon, said boards G beingprovided at their forward ends with the hooks t t, which are adapted to hook into the eyes or staples t t, secured to or driven into the outside of the cleats E E of the frontend-board of the box. At the rear end the said side-boards G G are formed with the extensions m m, which, when the boards are in place upon the mainpart ot' the box, fit under the projections m m of the end-gate H, which firmly locks the said side boards in place, as shown in Fig. 4. By this means the side and end boards may be quickly and easily put Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pateutt 1. The ball D,hinged to thesidesofthebox, in combination with the end-board 0, attached thereto by the eye-platesff, and provided with the sliding bolts and catches i i, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the box A,having the end-boards 0 secured thereto by the bail D, of the separate side-boards G G, and the end-gate H, provided with the hooked plates Z l, substantially as described.
3. Theend-gate H, having thehooked plates l l and hooks in /r,in combination with the sideboards G G and bail D,substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The end-gate H, formed with the projections 'm m,in combination with the side-boards G G, provided with theprojections m in, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The side-boards G G, provided with the standards or cleats q and outside cleats, s, and
having the hooks t t at their forward ends. in
combination with the end-gate H, provided with the hooked plates Z l and books k, the ends of the said gate being formed with the projections m m, and the rear ends of the sideboards being formed with the projections m{ m, and having the staples n n, substantially as described.
EUGENE F. CHAPMAN.
