l A. POOL. WAGON BOX EXTENSION ANOEND GATE.

THE NaRRls PErERs co., wf. a unan, o. c.
NITE STATES PATENT OFFICEs ALVA POOL,- OF STARFIELD, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES P.-TYER, OF CLINTON COUNTY, MISSOURI.
Specification of Letters .Patent Patented Jan. 29, 1907.
Application filed September 17, 1906. Serial No. 834.965.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALvA PooL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Starfield, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeders Wagon-Box Extensions and End-Gates; and I do declare the' an extension and end-gate that can be readily attached to or removed from the rear end of a wagon-box and that is especially adapted for the use of farmers and feeders in scooping corn and other products when hauled to the place of storage or use.
I accomplish my obj ect by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a wagon-box broken away, an extension thereto, and the mechanism connecting said extension and box. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same including an end-gate in locked position. Fig. 3 is a detail section of a hinged casting, a threaded end of a bar therein, and a tail-nut; and Fig. 4 is a detail of a casting attached to the top of wagon-box.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
In these views, A represents an ordinary wagon-box with side-boards A A. An extension of said box consists of a floor B and sides b b. These sides are preferably made of the form shown in Fig. l, but their exact shape is not material. The sides and bottom of the extension are strengthened by means of an iron strap C on each side turned beneath the floor.
C is a cleat rigidly attached to and beneath the rear end of the wagon-box floor, its ends extended, and C2 is a similar cleat, ex-
'cept without extended ends, rigidlyattached to and beneath the floor of the extension. It is adapted to iit solidly against the rear side of cleat O.
D D are right and left castings adapted to be rigidly fastened on the tops of the sides of Ain loops F F.
the wagon at the rear. Each casting is provided with a shoulder d, against which the sides of the extension at the top set. Flat bars E E have inwardly and downwardly turned arms E E', adapted to engage with notches d d in said castings D D. The lower ends e e of said bars are round and threaded for receipt of tail-nuts e e. Castings F F are adapted to be set iiat against the upper ends of straps O C and attached to the sides of the extension by bolts through perforations in said straps after bars E E have been placed in position on the extension. The lower round ends e e of said bars are' held Straps having projecting axles H H are fastened to the bottom of cleat C2. These axles carry catches I I, which are provided with holes fi i, through which bar ends e e extend. Right-angle seats I I in the top of said catches I I engage with the ends of the front lower corner of cleat C', and when the tail-nuts are wound up tight against the bottoms of these catches said cleat is held rigidly in said seats of the catches and the bars and extension are held immovable.
J is an end-gate of the full width of the wagon-box, including the wagon-box sides, which when shut sets solidly against the rear ends of said sides. It is hinged to the side l) of the extension, its other end being provided with a bracket K, carrying a rod L, with its inner end bent at a right angle, forming a handle L. The other end of said rod is also bent at a right angle, forming a fastener M. In the side b of the extension there is a slot O, provided with a slotted plate O, preferably vertical, on a line horizontal Awith bracket K. When it is desired to lock the end-gate, rod L is rotated by means of its handle L until the fastener M is turned downward in a vertical position. It is then shoved through said slot and rotated forward or backward to a horizontal position. The device is thus locked, and the end of the gate and side b2 are also clamped together.
To remove the extension and end-gate vfrom the wagon-box, it is only necessary to unwind the tail-nuts, lift arms E E out of notches d d, and release hinged catches I I from engagement with the threaded ends of the bar.
IOO
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination With a Wagon-box, of right and left castings provided With outer Shoulders and notches in the top, the projecting ends of a cleat attached beneath the rear end of said box, an extension consisting of a floor and two sides, one of Which is provided With a slot, a cleat adapted to fit alongside the box-cleat, upper castings and lower loops and the bars adapted to engage there- With and the bar-arms engaging With said notches, axles projecting from beneath the extension-cleat, catches carried thereon and provided with holes through the opposite ends for engagement With the threaded ends of said bars and seats in the catches for en-y gagement With said box-cleat, the tail-nuts to hold said catches up in rigid engagement With the ends of said cleats, the hinged endgate forward in said extension closing against the rear ends of the sides of the Wagon-box, a bracket attached to the end-gate horizontal With said slot in a side of the extension, a rod and lits arm carried by said bracket and the fastener end of said rod engaging with said slot to lock the end-gate, substantially as set forth and shown.
2. The combination With the extension of a Wagon-box and the cleats, of duplicate bars and their supports on the sides of the extension, the axles projecting from beneath the extension, the catches carried on' said axles With perforations in their opposite ends to engage with said bars and the seats at the top thereof to engage with the Wagon-box cleat, substantially as set forth and shown.
3. The combination of a Wagon-box extension provided with a slot in a side thereof, an end-gate hinged to the opposite side, a bracket on said end-gate horizontal with said slot, a rod carried by said bracket one end bent at a right angle to serve as a handle, the other end bent to engage With said slot to serve as a fastener, substantially as set forth and shown.
4. In a Wagon-box and an extension thereof, right 'and left castings, the shoulders out- Ward thereon to serve as bearings for the sides of the extension, the notches in the tops thereof and the flat arms of the bars adapted to engage with said notches, substantially as set forth and shown. f
In testimony whereof I affix my signature Vitnesses z FRANK C. To'rTEN, EVANGELINE GIBBONS.
