S. G. BROWN'I4 Wagon B0X.
No.- 233,655. Patented Oct. 26,1880.
UNITnn STATES SYLVESTER C. BROWN, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, MICHIGAN.
WAGON-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,655, dated October 26, 1880.
A Application fnedJuiy 31, naso. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SYLvEsTER C. BnoWN, of Mount Pleasant, Isabella county, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Iagon- Boxes, ofwhich the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wagonboxes; and the invention consists inthe peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the endboards retain the several parts in their relative positions, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Itigure l is a perspective view of my improved wagon-box. Figs. 2, 3, 4., 5, and Gare details of construction.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part ot' this specification, A represents the sides, B the endhoards, and O the holsters, of a wagon-box.
At the four corners ot' the box and to the side-boards A, l properly bolt the female dovetail iron I), designed to receive the ends of the eudboards. The same bolts, a, which secure these irons in place also pass through an iron, E, the lower end of which projects below the bottom of the box and is provided with a T-head, F.
An iron, G, is secured to the under side of each bolster C and near the ends thereof, and through theseirons and the holsters are formed the T-slots a. Between the two irons E upon the side-boards I secure similar irons H, which are likewise provided with the T-heads above described.
To each end of the end-boards and upon each side thereof I bolt an iron, I, provided with the dovetail rib Z), thus forming upon each end of the end-boards a 'male dovetail.
When it is desired to putv this box togetherA the side-boards are set up, the T-heads of the irons E and H projecting downward through the slots a in the ends of the bolsters O and irons G, when they are pushed outwardly, compelling the heads of their irons to engage v with the smaller portion of the slots a. The
end-boards are then pnt in place. The two members of the dovetails coming together rmly secures the sides in place, from which they cannot be removed without iirst removing the endboards.
By this construction of parts I produce a strong wagon-box, and one that can be readily set up or knocked down, while I dispense with the various rods and other devices heretofore used for holding the sides in place.
I am aware that the end-gate of a wagonbody has heretofore been removably secured to the body by means of female dovetail'irons secured to the inner faces of the longitudinal sides of the body, which female irons receive male dovetail irons secured to the ends of the gate and sliding in the female irons, and I therefore lay no claim, broadly, to such construction, my invention being confined to the details of construction pointed out in the claims.
That I cla-iin as my invention is- 1. The combination, with the dovetail female irons. D and irons E, with T-heads secured to the side-boards, of the bolsters C and the end-gate B, having the male irons I, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. rIhe combination, with the side-boards A, dovetail female irons D, irons E, with T- heads, and bolts a, securing both the ironsl) and E to the side-boards, of the bolsters C and plates G, both provided with T-shaped slots registering with each other, and the endgate B, having the male irons I, with dovetail ribs b, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the side-boards A, of the irons H, secured thereto and provided with T-shaped heads, of the bolsters C, having T-shaped slots near their ends, and plates G, with T shaped slots registering with those in the bolsters and secured thereto, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
SYLVESTER C. BROWN.
