Description
Pawn-red necj, i901. l
(No Model.)
ll M VCA WARD ELDRED, OF CARROLLTON, ILLINOIS.
WAGON-BX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,734, dated December 3, 1901.
Application led May 23,v 1901.
To all whom, it may concern:
Beitknown that I, WARD ELDRED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carrollton, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Boxes; and'I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- 1o pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to wagon-boxes.
The object of the invention is to provide a wagon-box which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production and one whose sides and ends may be easily and quickly removed and put in place.
With this and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of 2o construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wagonbox, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the floor or bottom of the box or wagon body, 2 the sides, and 3 and 4 the front and rear 3o end-gates, respectively. The sides are each provided with vertical metallic straps 5, bolted or otherwise secured at suitable distances apart to the outer face portions of said sides and having approximating their lower ends staples 6 for a purpose presently to be explained. Secured transversely to the under side of said iioor or bottom 1 are the strengthening braces or cleats 7, which have secured rigidly to them Vone portion of clamps 8, the
4o outer or free ends of which are bent atright 5o of the body together.
remove the sides, these keys are driven from the staples of the metallic straps 5, and the free ends of the clamps 8 are forced outwardly, thereby permitting of said sides being with- Serial No. 61,564. (No model.)
drawn. The sides at their ends on their adjacent faces are provided with grooves or channels for the end-gates 3 and 4, and to brace the upper portions of the sides 2 against out: Ward pressure the upper edges of the endgates are provided with continuous straps 11 and 12, having right-angled spring-hooked ends 16, which lap over the upper ends of the sides, which, in connection with holding the cure the end-gates in position in their respective channels.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spiritor sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sectional wagon-body having the side portions provided with metallic strips secured vertically at suitable distances apart to the outer face walls thereof, staples secured to the metallic strips at their lower portions, channels at the opposite ends of the side walls, end-gates mounted in said channels, straps secured to the upper edges of the endgates, having hooked ends, whereby to clamp the said side walls in contact with the said end-gates, clamps having one portion rigidly secured to the bottom of the body, the outer or free ends thereof being bent at right angles therewith, so as to extend upwardly in line with the metallic strips, said free ends having eyes to engage the staples of the metallic strips, and the wedge-shaped keys secured in said staples whereby to force the free ends of clamps against the lower outer faces of the vertical metallic strips, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
