Description
I H. s. SWAN. MEANS FOR DETAOHABLY CONNECTING WAGON BOXES AND, BACKS.
APPLICATION IILED 00114, 1908.
Patented July 6 1909.
f it i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY S. SWAN, OF WANAMINGO, MINNESOTA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application filed October 14, 1908. Serial No. 457,609.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY S. SWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wanamingo, in the county of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Detachably Connecting Wagon-Boxes and Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a convenient and reliable means for detachably connecting together a wagon body and a rack; and to these ends, my invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like references refer to like parts throughout the several VIEWS.
In said drawings; Figure 1 is a plan view showing the wagon body and rack tightly clamped together in working position. Fig. 2 is a detail in section on the llne r of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a 0: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail in section on the line .12 r of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the joint plates for interlocking the wagon body and rack, detached.
The numeral 1 designates a wagon body of the proper strength and height to support the rack 2 above the level of the wagon wheels, when the said parts are in working position on the running gear of a wagon, not shown. The rack 2 is of the customary skeleton form, and all its cross bars are provided on their under sides with mortise-like plates 3 adapted to engage with the to portions of the sides of the wagon-box 1 w en the rack is properly located on the body, as shown in Fig. 1. The front and rear members of the rack cross bars are shown as provided with clevises 4 which embrace the said cross bars and are carried thereby, with freedom for vertical sliding motion relative thereto under the action of eccentric headed cam levers 5 which are carried by the upper ends of the clevises 4 in such position that the of Goodhue and State 1 I eccentric heads of these levers 5 will react against the top surfaces of the cross bars for raising or lowering the clevises 4, as best shown in Fig. 2. The sides of the wagon t body 1 are provided with hook-ended lugs 6 secured thereto in proper position to be engaged by the lower ends of the clevises 4 when the latter are in their lowermost position and adapted to be tightly clamped thereto when the cam levers 5 have been turned into proper position to draw the clevises 4 to their highest points,
in Fig. 2.
It is obvious that the parts marked 4, 5 and 6 constitute a form of clamp; and that the four sets of these clamps applied at the corner 'o'ints between the wagon body 1 and v the rac 2, when the latter is properly seated 1 thereon, will firmly and securely clamp the rack to the wagon body in its proper working position. The mortise plates 3 are bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the cross bars of t the rack 2, and the hook lugs 6 are bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to the sides of the wagon body 1.
The rack is, of course, adapted for use in the customary way for hauling hay, straw, or other similar material, when loaded thereon.
What I claim is:
The combination with a wagon box, of a rack having mortise-like plates on the under side of its cross bars adapted to engage with. the top portion of the sides of the wagon box, a series of hook-like lugs on the wagon box,
a series of links carried by the cross bars of the rack and mounted for vertical movement in seats formed in said plates and adapted to engage said lugs, and which links are provided with a series of cam levers adapted to react against the upper face of the rack cross bars for detachably clamping said box and rack tightly together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY S. SWAN.
Witnesses:
HENRY M. HALvoRsoN, AUG. Moses.
