S. G. TRAVIS. END GATE FOR WAGONS. v No; 322,506. PatentedJuly 21, 1885.
WITNESSES IJVVEJV-TOR I gw A fl77zwl I I I r Attorney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL G. TRAVIS, OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,506, dated July 21, 1885.
Application filed March 28, 1585.
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. TRAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates for \Vagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figurel of the drawings is a perspective view of the rear end of a wagon body or box embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; Fig. 3, a detail view of the end-gate, showing a modified form of fastening; Fig. 4,
an edge view of the gate; Fig- 5, adetail view in perspective of the cam-fastening device, and Fig. 6 a detail view of one of the metal straps.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and effective means for securely fastening the end-gates in position on wagon boxes or bodies; and it consists in the general construction of parts, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the rear end of a wagon body or box, provided with the end-gate B, secured thereto by means hereinafter described. The wagonbody A, upon its inner sides, has cleats a, against which the ends of the gate B abut, and slots 1) to form seats for the horizontal rod 0 when the gate is in position to be fastened. The rod 0 is adapted to turn upon its axis, it being supported by eyes 0 at the upper ends of bolts D. In the present instance these bolts are formed of strap-iron reduced at their lower ends to enter perforations in plates 41, secured at proper distances apart to the bottom of the wagon-body, said bolts being permanently secured to the outer side of the gate.
The rod 0 is screw-threaded at one end to receive a button, 6, and at its opposite end has pivoted to it a cam, E, provided with a hooked lever, f.
The usual iron straps, E,which are secured to the sides of the body A, I provide with slots 9 at their upper ends, and also with outwardly-extending catches h, as shown in Fig. 6.
(No model.)
it lengthwise under the catches h, and by the hooked lever f the cam E is brought against the face of the strap F, and by further pressing down on the lever the cam will draw the rod 0 tight, and thus firmly and securely hold the gate in position.
The cam E is provided with a slot, '5, to form a seat for the end of the rod O,When the cam is brought to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1.- The hooked lever forms a very convenient means of operating the cam, allowing greater leverage than were it a simple straight handle.
The gate, if preferred, need not be removed from the wagon-body, and when released, by pressing down on the'lever of the cam, the rod will be loosened, allowing it to be raised out of the slots 1), and placed on the supports it, thus avoiding the necessity of entirely removing the gate when dumping a load.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modification of the bolts; that in place of having them sta tionary and formed of strap-iron, I construct them of rods held in a vertical position by staples Z, through which they pass, and connected at their upper ends to hangers G, rigidly secured to the rod 0.. By this means, when the rod 0 is turned in its eye-bearing m, the bolts will be raised out of the perforations in the plates cl without the necessity of raising the gate.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wagon body or box having at its sides open slots and straps or plates provided with catches, and an end-gate having bolts, incombination with a horizontal rod adapted to rest in the slots and removable therefrom, an adjustable button engaging with the screwthreaded rod to act in connection with the catches, and a cam pivoted to the opposite end of the rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ICO
2. A wagon body or box having slots at its I sides and catches, in combination with an endgate provided with bolts to engage with perforations in the bottom of the box or body, hereunto subscribed my name in the presence and a horizontal rod screw-threaded at one of two witnesses. end and provided with a button, and at the opposite end with a pivoted cam having a SAMUEL TRAVIS 5 slot and hooked lever, substantially as and for Witnesses:
the purpose set forth. GEORGE P. SHEPHERD,
In testimony that I claim the above I have E. J. HOHNAN.
