KNOGKDOWN BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent. y lPaJiclmtel Api'. ll, 19117.
Application led August 24, 1914. Serial No. 858,288.
To all lwhom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GABRIEL KRBAVAC, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Avery, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knoclrdown Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in lrnockdown boxes and has for its primary object to provide a box of this character which will be constructed in such manner that the sides and ends thereof, as well as the bottom, may be readily interlocked and reinforced along their edges with suitable corner strips adapted for interlocking engagement with one another.
The invention has for another object to provide a knockdown box of this character which will be provided with improved and novel reinforcing strips which will serve to reinforce the corners of the box when the same is in shutup position, and which will also be provided with interlocking lugs and slots to securely fasten and support the sides and ends upon the bottom, one of the sides being hinged by the corner strip provided therefor to the bottom of the box, while the opposite side is adapted to be removably fastened to the bottom by bolts or other suitable securing members carried through the corner strips carried by said sides and through upwardly curved ends of transverse reinforcing and bracing strips secured to the underface of the bottom, the ends of the strips being slidably engaged in the corner strips of the sides and the top carrying transverse reinforcing strips with locking tongues 4formed at one end for engagement in locking slots formed in upwardly projecting portions of the corner strips carried by the sides, while the ends also carry reinforcing and protecting strips at their upper edges provided with locking tongues turned for engagement in openings in the corner strips of the sides to'prevent upward movement of said ends.
The invention has for a still further object to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and form the bottom, ends and sides in such manner that the edges thereof will be provided with interlocking grooves or channels extending along the vertical edges of said ends and sides to forni square corners for the box and at the same time prevent inward movement of the ends or sides with respect to one another or with respect to the bottom.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, co1nbination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a knockdown box constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same, near one side of the box,
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section near one end of the box,
`Fig. i is anl enlarged detail perspective view of one upper corner of one of the ends of the box,
Fig. 5 is a detail enlarged perspective view of one of the upper corners of one of the sides of the box, showing the construction of the corner strip carried thereby,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail perspective view of one corner of the top of the box,
showing one of the transverse reinforcing strips carried thereby and having a locking tongue projecting from one end,
Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view, showing the manner in which one of the lower corners of a reinforcing strip of the box is hinged to the bottom thereof,
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7, showing the manner in which the lower corners of the rear side of the box are removably fastened with the bottom thereof, and
Fig. 9 is an enlarged detail sectional view through the means lfor securing the rear edge of the top to the upper edge of the rear side of the box intermediate the ends thereof.
vReferring in detail to the drawings by numerals, l designates the bottom of the box which has the wood reinforcing strips 2 secured to its underface and extending transversely of the bottom spaced distances from the ends of said bottom. The bottom 1 has the channels 3 formed in its upper face around its four edges to receive the lower edges of the sides 4 and ends 5 of the box. The sides 4 have the wood reinforcing strips 6 secured upon their outer faces and extending transversely of the same spaced distances from the ends of said sides 4, while wood reinforcing strips 7 are secured transversely upon the outer face of the ends 5 spaced distances from the ends or vertical edges thereof and similar wood reinforcing strips 8 are secured transversely upon the outer face of the top 9 of the box spaced distances from the ends thereof. It will be understood that the bottom 1, sides 4, ends 5 and top 9 of the box are preferably formed of wood, but these parts as well as the reinforcing strips 2, 6, 7 and S may be of any suitable and well known material.
The bottom 1 has the angular end reinforcing strips 10 secured along its opposite ends with one flange positioned against the underface of the bottom 1, while the opposite flange is extended upwardly and engaged against the ends of said bottom, the upper edge of the upstanding flange being substantially flush with the upper face of thebottom 1. The lower flange or bottom flange of each corner strip 1() is curved at its forward end, as shown at 11, while the remaining or upstanding flange of each strip 10 is extended slightly at its forward end and rounded, as shown at 12, whereby the front side 4 of the box may be permitted to swing freely to open or upstanding position or to its closed or folded position upon the upper face of the bottom 1, said front side 4 being hinged by means of the hinge Vpins 13 engaged through the end vertical flanges of the angular corner strips 14 carried by the said front side 4 and secured in any suitable manner to the vertical edges i thereof, by the securing members 15 or the like engaged through the front flanges of said corner strips 14. It will be understood that the hinge pins 13 also extend through the upstanding flanges of the corner strips 10 adjacent the forward ends thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 7. When it is desired to secure the front side 4 to upright position, a securing bolt 16 is engaged through the lower ange of each end strip 10 adjacent the forward end thereof and also through the bottom tongue 17 extended at an angle from the bottom of the outer flange or forward flange of the corner strips 14 adapted for sliding engagement overthe beveled end 11 of the lower flange of the corner end strips 10 as the front side 4 is swung upon the hinge pin 13 to upstanding or folded position. lt will be understood that when the front side 4 is in its folded position, the outer flanges of the corner strips 14 engage the outer faces of the upstanding flanges of the end strips 10 of the bottom l.
1t will be understood by referring to the dra-wings that the corner strips 14 have their upper ends extended above the upper edges of the front side 4 and also of the ends, and the end flanges of the corner strips 14 are provided in their upper ends with locking slots 18 of substantially elongated form to receive the outwardly turned locking tongues 19 formed on the forward ends of the strengthening and protecting strips 20 secured above the upper edges of the ends 5 by suitable supporting plates 21, as will be readily understood.
rlhe rear endsof the protecting strips 20 also have outwardly directed locking tongues 22 formed thereon for engagement through the elongated locking slots 23 in the upper extended ends of the rear corner strips 24 secured along the vertical edges of the rear side 4 of the box, it being understood that the locking slots 23 are provided in the end flanges of said corner strips 24. The strips 20 with the locking tongues 19 and 22 engage in the locking slots 18 and 23 respectively, will serve to prevent upward movement of the ends 5 and will also prevent outward movement of the rear side 4 of the box. It will be understood that the ends 5 are provided with suitable handles 25 by means of which they may be raised and lowered when the tongues 19 and 22 are withdrawn from thev locking slots 18 and 23 respectively.
The sides 4 and ends 5 are provided in their vertical edges with the channels 4 and 5 respectively, whereby the edges may be interloclred to provide square corners and permit the corner strips 14 and 24 to engage the outer faces of both the sides 4 and ends 5. It will also be understood that the rear side 4 is securely fastened in upright position by suitable securing members 26 passed through the rear or side flanges of the rear corner strips 24 and through the upstanding supporting arms 27 formed on the rear ends of the lower or bottom flanges of the end strips 10, the rear ends of the upstanding flanges of the end strips 10 being straight, as shown at 28, for engagement against the inner faces of the rear or side flanges of the corner strips 24 to prevent the rear side 4 from folding inwardly toward the bottom 1, it being understood that the supporting arms 27 prevent outward movement of the rear side 4. 1t will bereadily understood that the end flanges of the corner strips 14 and 24 are provided with suitable openings 29 and 30 respectively to receive suitable securing means for permanently securing the ends 5 in position, if desired. It'will further be understood that the lower ends of the side flanges of the cornerstrips 2 4 are beveled, as shown at 31, for engage; ment with the rounded lower end of the supporting arms 27 this flange of the corner strips 24 being shorter than the end flanges which extend downwardly against the outer face of the upstanding anges of the end strips 10.
The top 9 is secured in position by en gagement of the locking tongues 32 formed on the rear ends of the transverse reinforcing and bracing strips 33, into locking slots 34 formed in the extended upper ends of the side anges of the corner strips 24 and extending horizontally, said slots 34 being preferably of elongated form. lt will be understood that the reinforcing strips 33 are secured upon the upper' face of the top 9, and said top 9 may be locked in closed position by engagement of a padlock or the like with the staple 35 projecting from the front side 4 after the hasp 36 has been engaged with said staple 35, it being understood that the hasp 36 is hinged to the forward edge of the top 9. When it is desired to secure the top 9 to the side 4 of the box, suitable securing screws or the like 37 may be threaded through the interiorly threaded socket 38 positioned in the top 9 at the front and rear edges thereof, and said securing members 37 rotated until they engage through the depending interiorly threaded sockets 38 secured in the upper edges of the sides 4 by suitable securing members 39 passed through the anges 40 of said sockets 38 resting in suitable recesses formed in the upper portions of said sides 4.
From the foregoing it will be clearly apparent that l have provided a knockdown box which will be of extremely simple construction and strong and durable in use, and
will further be of such form that the corners and edges thereof will be securely rein forced, as well as air tight and the parts of the box may be securely fastened to one another when the top is in setup position.
While l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
A knockdown box including a bottom having its peripheral edge grooved, front, rear and end walls having their lower ends grooved defining tongues which are seated in the groove of the bottom, end strips, said end strips being substantially E shaped and each having one of its anges secured to one end of the under side of the bottom, the remaining flange engaging an edge of an end wall, corner strips, said corner strips being substantially L-shaped in cross section and each having one ange secured to an end wall of the box, and the remaining flange to the front or rear wall, saidfront wall being pivotally secured to one flange of each of the end strips, a cover, means carried by the cover securing the same to the upper edges of the rear, front and end walls.
ln testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
