Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911.
Application filed September 1G, n1909. Serial No. 518,087.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. BEDELL, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Hackensack, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shipping Boxes or Cases, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to a shipping box or case for merchandise or contents of various kinds. This case or receptacle is adapted to be folded or brought into small compass so that the box or case can be stored or shipped and save considerable floor space or shipping space. By saving car space or room in packing or shipping considerable saving is obtained with the consequent advantages.
This invention is set forth in the following specication and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawing in which Figure 1 is a` perspective view cf a box embodying this invention the cover of the box having been removed. Fig. 2 is a section along the line :c m Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section along the line y y Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows the box folded or collapsed. Fig. 5 is a section along the line .e e Fig. 4. Fig. 6 shows a side wall.
In this drawing the letter a designates two parallel base bars having a bottom b fastened thereon. Four corner posts -e extend upwardly at right angles to the base bars when the case is set up as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The lower ends of these posts are pivoted at Z to the outer sides of the parallel base bars. Each of the pivotal connections d comprise a bolt extending horizontally through a post and fastened to a base bar best seen in Fig. 3. To the said corner posts are suitably secured end pieces e. Each of these end pieces may consist of a panel secured to two of the posts as shown or may be in the form of spaced slats secured on to the posts as used in ventilated boxes. A pair of side pieces f are slipped or inserted between the inner sides of the end pieces and the corner posts. Each side piece has a grooved upright g into which can be slipped or inserted a partition h to divide the case when desired. The said side pieces have cleats m fastened to the ends thereof which are provided with tenons at their lower ends to fit into slots or mortises formed in the base bars a. As shown in the drawing each of the side pieces f consist of a panel, but it will be obvious that spaced slats could be secured to the cleats when ventilation of the box is needed. Suitable screws or fastenings z' can be employed when the box is set up to secure the side pieces to the corner posts.
A cover 7c can be secured to the top of the box and being slightly elevated and somewhat narrower than the box the said cover will enter the space between the base bars o of a box that may be superposed on a lower box and shifting of boxes can thus be avoided as indicated in Fig. 3.
When the side pieces f are removed the end pieces with the corner posts can be folded or swung toward each other so as to dispose said end pieces upon the upper face of the bottom piece and the corner posts will be positioned along the outside of the parallel base bars as seen in Fig. 4. It will be seen that when the case is folded it is almost flat so that when reshipping a number of the folded cases can be stacked or piled together to take up as little space possible.
It should be said that the method of connecting the corner posts to the parallel base bars by means of horizontal bolts forms a strong and durable case when in transit, and at the same time forms a hinge whereby the case can be quickly folded when reshipping.
Having thus described my invention what I claim new is:
A shipping case comprising a pair of horizontal parallel base bars having a bottom fastened thereon, corner posts pivotally connected at their lower ends to the outer sides of the base bars, and end pieces secured to the corner posts, each of said pivotal connections consisting of a bolt extending horizontally through a post and connected to a base bar, a pair of side pieces disposed between the inner sides of the 'end pieces,
said side pieces having cleats secured thereto with tenons formed at their lower ends to engage slotsv formed in the base bars, and devices for removably fastening the said sides to the posts, said corner posts with their end pieces extending upwardly at right angles to the base bars When the ease is set set my hand in the presence of tWo subup and belng adapted to mung toward each semblng Wltnesses. other When the. slde pleoes are removed the 1 g end pieces to repose upon the bottom piece bTEl HEN D' BEDELL' and the posts to a position along the out- Witnesses: side of the base bars. W. C. HAUFF,
In testimony whereof I have hereunto CHRISTIAN ALMSTAEDT.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents Washington, D. C.
