UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN D. BEDELL, OF HAGKENSACK, NEW JERSEY.
SHIPPING-CASE.
lb all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN D. BEDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hackensack, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a case or box suitable for various purposes as for example shipping eggs fruit, vegetables and the like.
The case or box is made foldable which will enable the saving of expense for shipping and the like and such box is also made of sufiicient strength and durability to serve its purpose or carry product to and out of the market in suitable condition withoutloss.
This invention is set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawing in which Figure 1 shows a perspecti e view of a box embodying this invention the box being open or unfolded or in condition to receive contents. Fig. 2 shows a section of the box across its central portion. Fig. 3 shows a central longitudinal section of the box. Fig. 4L shows a plan view of the box when folded or collapsed. Fig. 5 is a section along line 02 m Fig. i.
The case or box comprises four uprights or corner posts (4. Upper cross bars or frame pieces are shown at b and lower cross bars are shown at 0. The uprights and frame bars are shown connected at cl by bolts or pivot pieces. These connections cl allow the bars to turn on the bolts or posts so that the case can fold.
Upper and lower side rails c extend along the length of the box, and are set into or connected to the uprights a in suitable manner as by being sent into seats in the uprights or by tongue and groove connection. When the box is open the bottom 7 can be put in place or supported on the upper sides of the lower cross bars 0. The cross bars 0 are sufliciently wide or projecting to support the bottom. The bottom being kept from resting on the floor allows a suitable amount of ventilation. Being thus suitably supported the bottom is kept from pulling off or coming out of place in transit. The end panels 9 can be set at their upper and lower edges into grooves formed in the inner edges of the bars Z2 and 0 so as to be firmly supported. The side panels h of the Specification of Letters Patent.

box are supported between the rails e, the inner longitudinal edges of which latter are likewise grooved.
As indicated in Fig. 1, the end panels 9 can be made to terminate somewhat short of the uprights to provide for ventilation when required. hen the box is empty the bot tom 7 can be readily lifted out of place and the case or crate can be suitably folded or collapsed as indicated in Fig. 4: so as to. be readily transportable in small bulk or without loss of space. When full the box can be provided with a cover which can be clamped or secured in place in any suitable manner. Then the box is open the pivots or bolts d can be suitably screwed up or tightened to give a certain amount of rigid ity or prevent the box readily collapsing. The bottom f when in the box will keep the box open to receive contents.
Nails need not be used in the construction of the box and the box being so constructed that it will not go to pieces in transit will save loss and claims. hen the boxes are constructed to allow ventilation no separating strips or spacing pieces will be required thus saving time in shipping, storing and handling.
I claim A case comprising, in combination, corner posts, each provided at opposite ends with seats; side rails having their ends fitted in said seats and their inner longitudinal edges formed with grooves; side panels supported between said rails and having their upper and lower edges fitted in said grooves; upper and lower cross bars pivoted at opposite ends to the extremities of said posts and project ing inwardly of the case across the outer longitudinal edges of said rails, said bars having their inner faces formed with longitudinal grooves; end panels supported between said bars and having their upper and lower edges fitting in the grooves therein; and a removable bottom supported between the lower side rails upon the projecting por tions of the lower cross-bars.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' STEPHEN n. BEDELL.
