Description

D. STEINBERG.. Paper-Box Corner-Piece.
No. 216,237. Pa'tented June 3, 1879.
NJIER FNOTO-UTNOGRAPHER, wAsHmGTON D C vTJ`1\T``Y|`.E1)*S'rA'rEis PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID STEINBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN PAPER-BOX CORNER-PIECES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,237, dated June 3, 1879; application filed October 23, 1878.
invented a new and useful Improvement in- Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the acoompanying drawings, in whichi Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a box containing my invention. Fig. 2 shows a corner-protector before the same is bent into shape. Fig. 3 shows a modification of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention is especially applicable to paperboxes having an annular Shape; and it consists in a sheetmetal cornerprotector adapted to embrace the corner of a paper box and the corner of the lid or bottom of said box, and provided with points projecting from its edges, which may be bent in proper direction to be forced through and clinched to the walls of the box, for the purpose of holding the corner-piece in proper position.
In the drawings, the letter A designates an angular paper box provided with a lid, B. O are corner-protectors, and D are edge-protectors, applied to said box and lid.
The corner-protectors O cover the edges of the box and lid at the points where such edges meet or intersect each other, and by means thereof the strength and durability of the box are increased. i
The edge-proteotors D are fitted to the edges ot' the box and lid, and extend nearly the entire length of each of such edges-that is to say, the ed ge-proteotors are of sufficient length to permit of bringing the opposite ends thereof beneath the corner-protectors O, by which means the edge'protectors are held in position.
If desired, the edge-protectors D may be punohed inward at diverse points by a suitableinstrument to produce barbs, whereby those portions of the edge protectors located between the ends thereof are united with the box or lid.
I construct the corner-protectors O Vof a sini gle piece of sheet metal, and in Fig. 2 I have shown a blank adapted to the purpose, this blank having a segmen tal form, and being provided with spurs or points a. I bend the blank last named on the lines b c d, whereby the same is brought to a shape conforming to the corner of the box or lid, and in applying the same I cause the spurs or points a to penetrate the paper board oomposing the box or lid, and clinch the same on the interiorthereof, Whereby the said protectors are securely fastened.
The blank represented in Fig. 8 is used to form a corner-protector for the upper edge of the box.
Boxes have heretofore had their corners bound by metal plates formed of a straight piece of metal bent at right angles and flanged at their upper edge, the right-angled portion ernbracing the walls of the box at the corners, and the flanged portion resting on the top surface of the box, the said flanged portion being eonfined in place by rivets passing through openings formed in the fiange. Such is not my invention, and is, therefore, disclaimed.
. `I am aware that it is not new to unite the edges of a paper box by means of sheet-metal clasps having spurs or points to penetrate the box, and I do not olaim such as my inventiou; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sheet-metal corner-protector for paper boxes, consisting of a segmental-shaped blank bent ou the Vertical and horizontal lines b o d to form flanges which hold the corners of the box in position, the said blank being formed on its curved edge with spurs a a, which may be forced through and clinched to'the walls of the box, as shownyand described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of October, 1878.
