TOOL.=-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 648,285, dated February 13, 1900. Application filed November 11, 1899. Serial No. 736,717. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wedges for Securing Hammers or other Tools having Similar Eyes on their Handles, of which the following is a specification.
It is well known and a constant source of annoyance to mechanics that the heads of hammers, axes, and other similar tools become loosened from their handles when in use from the wedges which secure them on said handles working loose.
The object of my invention is to provide a wedge for a tool-handle which will retain its position in the tool-handle when once in place, and thus obviate the annoyance and danger from the tool flying off the handle when in use.
To this end'my invention consists in pro- Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The letter 0. indicates the wedge,having the nail-like projection 1) extending from its edge a v in line with the direction in which the wedge is to be driven, preferably provided with a point I).
The device is made of metal, preferably cast of malleable iron. 7
In applying the wedge to its intended use a hole somewhat smaller than the projection b is bored in the center of the tool-handle, in which the point of the projection b is inserted and the wedge driven to place, as shown in Fig. 3. The wood of the handle closes slightly behind the shoulder e, and this,w ith the wellknown tenacity with which a cylindrical body driven into wood is held, prevents the wedge from working loose, and thus the tool remains firmly fixed to its handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tool-handle. wedge, consisting of the metallic wedge or, provided with a nail-like projection 1), extending from the edge of said wedge, in a line with the direction in which the wedge is to be driven, and having the laterally-projecting shoulders e,substantiall y as shown, and for the purpose described.
ROBERT DOUGLAS.
