HANDLE-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. id, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HoLIK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ennis, in the county of Ellis and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handle-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for protecting handles of axes, hammers, and other similar tools, and it consists in the construction and arrangement herein described and claimed.
The main object of my invention is to provide a device for protecting the handle of a tool, such as an aX, and for stiffening it at its weakest point.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for preventing the head from flying off the handle.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the device will be particularly pointed outin the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this ap plication, in which- Figure l is a side view of an ax, a portion being shown in section for the sake of clearness; Fig. .2 is a perspective view of the protecting device; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp; Fig. 4 is a section along the line 44 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 5 is a section along the line 5-5 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a tool such as an ax, having a blade 1 provided with the usual handle opening 2.
The handle 3 is provided with the usual por-' tion 4; arranged to enter the opening 2. The protector 5 consists of a single piece of metal shaped as shown in the drawings being tapered from one end to the other. At
.the larger end it is provided with a flange or head 6 and at the smaller end with a flange or head 7. One side 5" of the protector 5 is substantially flat 'while the other side is rounded as shown in the drawings.
Tn assembling the device the protector is slipped through the handle opening 2 until the flange 6 engages the edge of the blade 1. The handle portion 4 is then forced into the opening 2 and secured therein in any suitable manner. A clamp 8 of the shape shown in Fig. 3 is then passed around. the smaller end of the protector 5 close to the flange 7. The clamp is drawn together by means of the screw 9 and nut 10 which pass through the ears 8".
From the foregoing description the utility of this device may be readily understood.
It will be apparent from Fig. 1 that the protector 5 forms a stiflening member for that part of the handle which is weakest. Furthermorait is on the side of the handle which receives the blows from mis-licks, and I handle extending through said opening, a
metal protecting device having a flat por tion on one side thereof extending longitudinally of.said protecting device and arranged to lie next to the handle, a portion of 'said protecting device being disposed within said opening, an integral flange carried by each end of the protecting device, the ends of both flanges being flush with the flat side of the protecting device so as to permit the free movement of the handle into the opening, one of said flanges being arranged to engage the end of the blade or head, and a clamp disposed upon the handle contiguous to the other flange for holding the protecting device to they handle, said protecting device tapering from the flange which engages the head to the flange which is contiguous to the clamp.
Gus Baoons, H. R. STOVALL.
