Description
No. 729,890. PATENTED JUNE 2, 19o3 G. W. PEEK.
' NAIL HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR HAMMERS, &0.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 26, 1902.
H0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented June 2, 190a,
PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WASHINGTON PEEK, OF GREENVIEW, CALIFORNIA.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,890, dated June 2, 1903.
Application filed July 26,1902. Serial No. 117,174. (No model.)
T0 at whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WASHINGTON PEEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenview, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Holding Attachments for Hammers, &c. and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in nail-holding attachments for hammers; and it has for its object the provision of *a simple and cheaply-constructed andat' the same time efficient and durable attachment of this character, which may be readily attached to either hammers, hatchets, or other like tools, and which will serve both to hold a nail when striking the same at the point at which it is to be driven and also serve to securely retain the hammerhead or hatchet blade against downward movement or displacement upon the handle.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel form of the attachment and in the peculiar manner in which it is applied to the hammer or other tool, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the let ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating the same parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device detached from the hammer. Fig. 2 is a like view of a hammer with the attachment applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the end of the handle of the hammer with the invention attached. Fig. 4 is a crosssectional view through the hammer-handle and the portion of the nail-holder which is fastened to the handle.
Reference now being hadto the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the nailholding attachment, which consists of a single piece of sheet metal of proper thickness, bent at substantially its longitudinal center. The body portion B, which is designed to be attached to the side of the handle of thehammer E, preferably within a depression or recess F, is provided with suitable holes f f for the receptionof tacks or other securing means. The free end of the metallic stripis preferably bifurcated and is bent upward adjacent to the side face of the head of the hammer or other tool, thus providing a notch or recess D for the reception of the head of a nail and serving to hold the same in position relative to the hammer to admit of the nail being struck into position for driving, when the device may be readily detached from the nail by'a downward movement being imparted to the hammer.
It will be readily seen from the foregoing description of the invention that when the head of the hammer is in place upon the handle the attachment will, by reason of its form and connection with the handle, serve to limit the downward movement of the h ammer-head upon the handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let'- ters Patent, is-- lncombination with a hammer-handle having a recess with closed surrounding walls formed in one face thereof adjacent to its end, a nail-holding attachment having a portion seated in said recess with its outer face flush with the adjacent face of the handle, the end of said nail-holder thus seated bearing against the end wall of the recess, screws countersunken in the nail-holder and engaging the handle, said nail-holder being bent at angles to receive the wall of a hammer-head, and its notched end outwardly inclined to conform to the side face of said head, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, GEORGE WASHINGTON PEEK.
Witnesses: i Y I H. S. DYER, WM. A. EGLI.
