4 Claims.
This invention relates to a hammer.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a claw hammer which is adapted to pull nails of various sizes, and in which the size of the head and the attendant leverage is improved and increased without materially increasing the weight of the hammer head.
Other objects of the present invention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide a claw hammer which is highly useful and simple in construction. Convenience of arrangement, lightness and comparative inexpense of manufacture are further objects which have been borne in mind in the production and development of the invention.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for the illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a top plane view of the hammer constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my hammer.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the hammer, the section being taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of my hammer, the section being taken on the lines 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention herein illustrated, I make use of a hammer which has the usual hammer head 6 with an aperture I in its hub 8 into which the usual handle 9 is suitably fitted. The claw ll of the hammer is formed by dividing an end of the hammer into two parts by a V shaped slot l2 so that the divided claw fingers I3 flare outwardly laterally of the hammer. While in this form the claw H is shown curved at a particular angle, it is to be understood that the shape of the hammer herein is shown merely for illustrative purposes and applicants invention can be applied to hammers of different shapes.
This structure heretofore described is a suitable hammer head of the type heretofore known. My invention improves the scope and eiiiciency of operation of such hammer heads. My invention includes a hollow body denoted in its entirety by the numeral M which is suitably fixed upon the top of the hammer head 6 so that it extends entirely over the claw l i as well as partly toward the other end of the hammer head 6. This hollow body may be formed in various suitable 2 manners. In the preferred embodiment herein illustrated, the hollow body it is formed from a heavy gauge sheet metal having a top wall [6 from which are downwardly bent opposite sides ll. Said sides I! taper gradually to a narrow width toward the point of the claw H and the lower edge 18 of each side i! is so curved that it conforms to the curvature of the top of the hammer head 6 and the top of the claw I I. It is to be noted that the width of this hollow body it is the same as the width of the top of the hammer head 5 and the lower edges I8 of the side 17 are fixed to the top of the hammer head H in a suitable manner such as by welding. The taper and curvature of the side I! is such that when assembled on the hammer head 6 the highest point of the hollow body M is above and around the handle 9 and the curvature of the taper on the outside top wall It is such as to provide a convenient radius of rocking thereon when the hammer is used for drawing nails. The distance of the surface on which the hammer is rocked is thus increased by the thickness or height of the hollow body i l on the top of the hammer head 5 and the leverage for pulling nails is correspondingly increased.
The top wall I6 of the hollow body M at the portion extending over the hammer claw II is also divided into two equal outwardly flaring claws [9 by a substantially V shaped claw slot 2| which latter may be of any desirable width, although as herein shown it is of the same width as the width of the hammer claw slot l2 but is slightly longer. It is to be noted that the inner sides of this auxiliary claw of the hammer and below the claw slot, are open the downwardly bent outer side walls 51 taking up the bearing pressure when a nail is pulled. The material is sufficiently strong to stand the usual forces of nail pulling without caving in. This open claw slot 2! provides an additional claw on the hammer fordrawing smaller size nails than is now possible with the usual claws ll of the hammer. The heads of such smaller size nails can be engaged by the under side of the top wall l6 adjacent the edges of the auxiliary claw slot 2!. The increased height of the hammer by the hollow body I l and the suitable bearing curve on its firm top wall is provide the suitable leverage for the increased force required to draw nails of even larger size.
The other end of the hollow body M is also curved and tapered from the higher hub portion downwardly toward the hammer head 6. This end of the hollow body is appreciably shorter than the claw l9 at the other end of the hollow body M. The top of the shorter end of the hollow body is also divided in equal parts by a claw slot 22 which is preferably smaller than either one of the other claw slots, and which has outer side walls 23 and is open at the inside so that the head of a nail may be received under the top wall thereat for drawing nails of still another range of sizes. The steepness of the curvature of the top wall at this shorter end of the hollow body l4 provides a steep leverage for a quick pullin or drawing of nails,
In the present form the hollow body is secured by welding the lower edges of the outer side walls thereof to the top of the hammer head 6. A hub 26 is formed by bending the material of the top wall down around a suitable hole 2'! so as to fit over the end of the handle 9. The handle 9 is secured into the completed hammer in any suitable manner. The hollow body [4 with its claw ends is fixed to the hammer head and forms an integral part of the hammer when so welded.
The herein invention provides auxiliary claws of different sizes as well as conveniently increased leverage on a higher bearing surface of suitable curvature in extension at the top of the hammer so that the hammer is adapted to draw a wider range of sizes of nails with greater efiiciency and ease than heretofore accomplished by hammers of known types. The handling of the hammer and placing of the respective claw slots over the heads of nails of the respective sizes can be accomplished with great facility by anyone using the hammer, the range of utility of the hammer is generally improved and increased, without materially adding to the weight of the hammer head,
I claim:
In a hammer, the combination with a hammer head having a handle extended therethrough; of an extension secured to the top of the hammer, a hub in said extension fitting over the end of said handle, a claw formed in said extension, and the top surface of said extension being curved from said hub toward said claw into a bearing surface for exerting leverage for drawing nails by means of said claw.
2. In combination with a hammer head having a handle extended therethrough, a hollow extension on the top of the hammer, a hub of said extension fitting over the end of said handle, said hollow extension having flaring dividing slots in each end thereof to form a claw at each end of said extension, said hollow head tapering from its hub respectively toward the end of each claw, the claws in the opposite ends of said extension being of difierent sizes.

In combination with a claw hammer, a hollow hammer extension on the top of the claw hammer, a handle extended through said claw hammer and through said extension, one end of said hollow extension extending over the claw of said hammer, tapering toward the top of said claw and having a claw slot longer than the claw slot of the claw of said hammer, a claw formed on the other end of said extension having a claw slot smaller than either of the other claw slots, the bottom edges of said extension fitting over the top of said hammer and over the claw of said hammer, and the top of said extension being curved from the portion of the extension around the handle toward the tips of the respective claws to form curved bearing surfaces for drawing nails,

In combination with a claw hammer, a hollow hammer extension on the top of the claw hammer, a handle extendedthrough said claw hammer and through said extension, one end of said hollow extension extending over the claw of said hammer, tapering toward the top of said claw and having a claw slot longer than the claw slot of the claw of said hammer, a claw formed on the other end of said extension having a claw slot smaller than either of the other claw slots, the bottom of said extension fitting over the top of said hammer and the claw of said hammer, and the top of said extension being curved from the portion of the extension around the handle toward the tips of the respective claws to form curved bearing surfaces for drawing nails, the outer walls of the hollow extension at each side of said extension being welded to the top of the hammer head.
