Description

A. B. ALLEN 1,896,437
PIPE WRENCH Filed Jan. 24, 1931 Patented Feb. 7, 1933 UNITED STATES ANDREW 1B. ALLEN, OF LOGKLAND, OHIO PIPE WRENCH Application filed January 24, 1931.
This invention relates to pipe and rod wrenches, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of this invention is to pro-- vide a device of this character including a stock or handle and opposing pipe or rod gripping jaws integral with the stock.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device of this character comprising an integral handle and opposing gripping jaws and without movable or detachable parts.
. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists substantially in the construction herein shown, described and claimed, and in the drawing illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved implement.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of same.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 4 is a transverse section on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
The improved implement comprises a stock 10 extended into a handle at one end and 0 with an inwardly curving integral jaw 11 at the other end, the inner face of the jaw be ing inwardly curved and formed with pipe or rod gripping inclined teeth 12. The stock 10 is enlarged at the junction 13 of the stock 10 and jaw 11, and extending from the enlargement is an opposing jaw 14 with the face 15 confronting the curved and toothed face of the jaw 11, and also curved but of less radius than the toothed jaw as shown in Fig. 1.
smaller jaw 14 on the other side.
posite direction.
Serial No. 511,038.
tween the jaws provides for gripping pipes or rods of varying sizes as will be obvious. The transverse face of the smallerjaw 14 is greater than the transverse face of the toothed jaw as indicated, and the opposing 5 face is formed with spaced reduced curved ribs 16 and 17 whereby the gripping force is materially increased without materially increasing the weight or expense of manufacture of the implement.
Formed upon the implement at the juncture of the jaw 11 and enlargement 13 is a hammer face 18 which will be found useful under many circumstances. I
The whole implement will preferably be of 6 cast or forged steel, and beingof a single piece may be constructed at small expense and of any required size or strength, and may be adapted for use on pipes or rods of 7 any size.
Having now described my invention, that which I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A pipe and rod wrench comprising a handl having an inwardly curved integrally formed toothed jaw at one end and an integral opposing j aw of less curvature than the toothed jaw and spaced therefrom, the jaws being flared outwardly from each other, the last-mentioned jaw having an outer circular face and having greater width than the toothed jaw and provided with a relatively shallow curved groove located intermediate the edges of said jaw thereby forming a pair of work- 8 engaging ribs, the side edges of the first-mentioned jaw being in planes which pass through the work-engaging ribs.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
