WRENCH.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 30, 1919.
Application filed July 26, 1918. Serial No. 246,915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SToFFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is a wrench intended principally for the use of plumbers.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a wrench which may be used on a large variety of fittings.
The invention also contemplates generally improving the construction and enhancing the utility of wrenches.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention, the same shown applied to a fitting which is in section;
Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the wrench applied to a different fitting;
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the wrench taken at right angles to Fig. 2 and showing the arms in closed position.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference In carrying out the invention there are provided two arms or bars 3 which are pivotally connected, as by the rivet 4, and the ends of the arms at one side of the pivot point are scarfed off to provide the angled faces 5, while the other ends are enlarged and slotted, as indicated at 6, to provide openings for the reception of nuts or other angled portions adapted to be engaged by a wrench.
From a consideration of Figs. 1 and 2 it will be evident that the scarfed ofi ends of the wrench are used after the manner of spanners and are adapted to engage the diametrically opposed interior lugs 2 of a fitting 1, or the lugs 2 in the flanged portion of the fitting 1. A bar 7 may be placed between the arms 3 for the purpose of turn ing the fitting to secure it in place or remove it, as the case may be.
It will thus be seen that the wrench is adapted to a variety of closet, bath, and sink fittings, and makes a most compact and useful tool for a plumber.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is
A wrench composed of twin members pivoted together to form when expanded a pair of shorter object engaging arms having their outer ends tapered to abut against a position of the said object, and a pair of longer arms to receive therebetween'and form the fulcrum for a lever for turning the wrench bodily.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, 1 have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
