Description
March 27, 1934. I LURCOTT BRUSH TIGHTENER Filed May 3, 1932 amma/bow Winfred NfLz/rcozf %i his Guam wa Patented Mar. 27, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: To increase the grip of the metal ferrule or bridle of a brush upon the haft thereof; to facilitate the operation of so increasing the grip of the ferrule to the end that needed repair may be performed quickly and without special preparation.
Drawing Figure 1 is a side view of a tightener constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, the jaws of the tightener being shown as in open or separated condition, a brush haft being indicated by dotted lines as held between said jaws.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the jaws as partially closed upon a smaller haft.
Figure 3 is a pictorial view of the usual artists brush, shown as being grooved for tightening the ferrule upon the haft, the tightener being shown as in section, the section being taken as on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Description As seen in the drawing, the two handles 8 are of similar construction and each is provided with flattened blade portions 9. The handles are united by means of the pivot 10.
The blade portions 9 are flattened on their meeting sides and are beveled to form gripping sections 11 and 12. The sections 11 and 12 are so shaped as to contact at diametric points with the hafts X, of all sizes. To this end the section 11 is curved convexedly, while the section 12 is curved concavedly.
The two handlesbeing shaped in all respects alike and the sections 11 and 12 thereof contacting with the haft at the diametrically opposite sides thereof, results in an equally disposed fourpoint contact between the sections of the tightener and the haft or ferrule of the brush.
As seen in Figure 3 of the drawing, the brushes for which the present device is especially designed has the haft X, the metal ferrule or bridle Y, and the tuft Z. When the blade portions 9 are closed upon the ferrule Y, the sections 11 and 12 may be pressed into the metal of the ferrule to crush the same at four equally divided points thereon. This prevents the collapsing of the ferrule.
By repeated pressures and shifting of the instrument with reference to the ferrule Y, a groove 0 of uniform depth is formed therein which sinks into the haft X of the brush, thereby tightening the brush structure.
It is obvious that with an apparatus constructed as herein disclosed, the operation of tightening the ferrule upon the haft, is quickly and readily accomplished, the operation being much the same as when handling a pair of pliers.
I claim:
An apparatus as characterized comprising a plurality of pivotally connected blade members, said members each having beveled sections, said sections being relatively oppositely curved, one being outwardly curved, and the other inwardly curved, the outwardly and inwardly curved sec- 5 tions on one member being diametrically opposite the inwardly and outwardly curved sections, respectively, of the other member for contact with a cylindrical body at diametrically opposite points thereof.
WINFRED N. LURCOTT.
