Description

A. EARNHART.
PLIERS.
APPLICATION HLED H Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
A. Earn/141 i ATTORNEY Improvements UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ARTHUR EARNHART, OF PONDC'REEK, OKLAHOMA.
PLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 15, 1920. Serial No. 365,902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR EARNHART, a citizen of the United States, residin at Pondcreek, in the county of Grant and tate of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful in Pliers, of which the followmg is a specification.
This invention relates to tools, particularly to pliers, and has for its object the provision of pliers having jaws formed con caved and serrated whereby to facilitate gripping the heads of bolts or nuts, the jaws being further provided at one side with flanges extending their full length and extending beyond the concavities whereby to engage against the face-of a nut or bolt head to prevent the pliers from slipping down or beyond the nut or bolt head.
An important object is the provision of pliers of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly efficient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and. other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of pliers constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3-is across sectional view through the jaws.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numerals 10 and 11 designate members arranged in crossed relation and pivoted, asshown at 12. At one end these members 10 and 11 are formed to provide handles, one of which is preferably formed as a screw-driver, as shown at 13. The other ends of the members 10 and 11 constitute jaws and the jaws are formed on their confronting faces with concavities l4 and are serrated or toothed, as shown at 15. At one edge the jaws are formed with flanges 16 which extend beyond the concavities and which are adapted to engage a bolt head or nutgripped by the jaws, the purpose of the flanges being to prevent the jaws from slipping along the bolt head or nut, as will be apparent.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple and inexpensive pllers which will be very efficient in gripplng action and which are partly adapted for use in holding the head of a bolt while. the nut is being unscrewed therefrom by a different tool.
While'I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention.
or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
Pliers comprising a pair offmembers arranged in crossed relation and pivotally connected, said members being formed at one end to define handles and having their other ends constituting jaws, the confront-- ing faces of said jaws being concaved and formed with serrations, and flanges formed on and extending the full length of sald jaws at one side thereof and projecting beyond theconcavities.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. ARTHUR EARNHART.
