WILLIAM J. WRIGHT, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
WRENCH-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
Application filedOctober 28, 1920. Serial No. 20,141.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM: J. YVRIGHT, of Baltimore, Maryland, have invented an Improvement in lVrench-Handles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates particularly to handles for double-ended fixed jaw wrenches such as are commonly supplied in sets of three or more for automobile tool kits. The invention aims to provide a simple and strong handle for such wrenches which may readily be detached and carried conveniently within small space, and which may be applied to any one of several wrenches of a set to increase its effective length and enable a greater purchase to be had upon the bolthead or nut.
Further objects and details of the invention appear in connection with the following description of a preferred form of wrench handle shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the handle applied to a wrench, shown partly in section to disclose the shape of the socket and fit of the jaw therein, and
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
The handle 11 shown in the drawings has a socket 12 at one end adapted to receiveeither of the jaw ends 13 of a double-ended fixed jaw wrench. The socket extends through the handle laterally, 2'. c. it opens toward both sides or edges of the handle, and has a notch or abutment 1 its inner end to receive the end of one jaw of the wrench which is inserted in the socket, so that the abutment portion lies between the two jaws.
it the extremity of the socket end of the handle there is a tirrup portion or fulcrum which bears against the intermediate shank portion 16 of the wrench. T he opening between the fulcrum l5 and the notch or abutment is is long and wide enough to accommodate the jaw end 13 of the largest size wrench for which the handle is adapted.
The invention is not restricted to wrenches like that shown in the drawings, as manifestly the socket and fulcrum ma be adapt ed to any wrench having a shank with a bifurcation or jaws at the handle end.
1 claim the following as my invention:
1. A handle for increasing the leverage of a wrench having a shank with a bifurcated end, said handle having a transverse socket to receive the bifurcated end of the vrench, and a fulcrum adjacent to and in longitudinal alinement with said socket for engaging the shank of said wrench.
A handle for increasing the leverage of a wrench having a shank with a bifurcated end. said handle having a socket opening laterally to receive the bifurcated end of the wrench, and having an abutment at the inner end of said socket for entering the bifurcation in the wrench, and a fulcrum at the extremity of said socket for engaging the shank of said wrench.
3. A handle for lengthening a double ended jaw wrench, said handle comprising a socket having a notch adapted to receive either jaw end and a fulcrum to engage the shank the wrench adjacent to the jaw, said fulcrum and notch being disposed to one side of the center line of said handle and socket whereby said handle is reversible upon said wrench to turn it in either direction.
l. A handle 'forlengthening a double enced jaw wrench, said handle comprising a socket having a notch at its inner end adapted to receive the tipof a jaw and a fulcrum at its extremity to engage the shank of the wrench adjacent to the jaw, said fulcrum and notch being disposed to bear against opposite sides of said jaw and shank, re spectively.
A wrench extension handle having a transversely disposed socket adapted to receive and hold the free end of a wrench in lo; git-udinal alinement with said handle and a fulcrum at its tip for engaging the wrench between its free end and jaw end, said socket and fulcrum being in spaced aline ment in the general direction of the length f s id handle.
wrench extension handle having two ely disposed portions near its exity in lengthwise alinement and a transverse opening between them for receiving the shank end of a wrench, whereby said oppositely disposed portions may engage said shank at different points of its length on opposite sides of its axis.
in testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM J. WRIGHT.
