GEAR AND KEY FULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug, 30, 1 9 2-1,
Application filed February 18, 1920, Serial No. 359,743. Renewed May as, 1921. Serial 473,322.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be 1t known that I, THOMAS W. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houiam, in the county of Grays Harbor and fiatateof lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gear and Key Pullers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 2
This invention relates to devices for re movingkeys, gibs, gears, sleeves, bushings and like-parts from shafts with which they are engaged, and the general object of the invention is to provide avery simple and effective device for this purpose which may be easily applied and which is thoroughly effective. r
Another object is to provide a construction of this character in which gripping jaws are provided to engage the key, gear wheel, or other part to be removed from the shaft, and in which these ripping jaws are urged away from the shaft by a screw bearing against the shaft and operatively connected to the jaws so that as the shaft is turned in one direction, the jaws will be forced away from the shaft, thus withdrawing the part engaged by the jaws.
Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device applied to removing a gear wheel;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, the arms 22 being in section;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation, the arms 22 and the rod 10 being in section;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the jaws 22;
Fig; 5 is a fragmentary plan view showing a modified form of the end of the jaw 22.
Referring to these figures it will be seen that my device comprises a centrally disposed rod, designated 10, which is screwthreaded for a portion of its length, aset 11, and is provided at its opposite end with a head 12 whereby a wrench may be applied to the-rod. Slidable on the smooth portion of the rod 10 is a collar 13 having projectends with the lugs 17, and pivoted tothese lugs are the pairs of outwardly extending arms 18., .each of these arms being perforated at a plurality of points, as at 19, Adapted to engage the gear wheel, sleeve, key, or other part are two jaws 20, the active faces of which are toothed, as at .21, these jaws having shanks 22 extending at right angles to the jaws or approximately parallel to the toothed faces 21, these shanks at their ends being pierced, as at 23, for the free passage of the arms 14 of .th ecollar 13. Pins 24 pass through the openings 19 in the arms 18 and through perforations 25 in the shanks 22 adjacent the clamping jaws 21. Nuts 15 engage the screw-threaded arms 14. ,lVhere the device is used for removing sleeves, gear wheels, and like parts, the toothed faces 21 are disposed in the same plane as the-shanks 22, but where these aws are tobe used for removing gibs, keys or the like, the toothed faces are off-set, as illustrated in Fig. 5, from the shanks.
It will be noted that the apertures 23 in the ends of the shanks remote from the jaws are elliptical in form so as to permit proper play between the screw-threaded arms 14 and said shanks without the shanks contacting with the screw-threads of the arms.
v In the operation of this device for removing a gear wheel, for instance, the jaws are set about the right distance apart to catch or engage the hub of the gear wheel A by putting the pins 24 through the proper holes in the pivoted arms 18. Then the nuts 15 are tightened up, that is, moved outward on the screw-threaded shanks 14 until the jaws grip tightly on the hub of the gear wheel.
Then thescrew-threaded rod 10 is rotated will cause the withdrawal of the gear wheel from the shaft.
The same operation is used where a key or like part is to be removed, but the aws are off-set at their ends, as illustrated in Fig. 5, so that they may come together under the screw-threaded rod 10.
This device, it will be seen, is very simple. It exerts a powerful force upon the element engaged by the jaws 21 and it is easily applied to work of various diameters and has a relatively large range of capacity.
I claim l. A device of the character described comprising a centrally disposed screw, a
collar through which the screw "loosely passes and having oppositely projecting, screw-threaded arms, a nut engaged by the threads of the screw and having arms pivoted thereto, jaws having shanks pivoted to said arms, said shanks at the endsremote from the aws being provided with perforations through which the arms of the collar loosely pass, and nuts carried upon said arms and engaging against the adjacent ends of the shanks whereby the adjacent ends of the shanks may be forced outward and the jaws forced against the work.
2. A device of the character described comprising a centrally disposed, screwthreaded rod having a head at one end whereby it may be rotated, a collar loosely mounted on the rod and having oppositely extending, screw-threaded arms,'nuts mounted on said arms, a nut mounted upon the screw-threads of the central rod and having outwardly extending, pivoted arms formed with a plurality of perforations, oppositely disposed jaws having shanks extending approximately parallel to the screw-threaded rod, the shanks being perforated, pins adapted to be inserted in any one of the perforations of said arms and through the perforations in the shanks, the'ends of the arms remotefrom the jaws being formed with perforations through which the screw-threaded arms on the collar loosely pass, the nuts on the said arms bearing against the inside faces of said shanks.
A device of the character described comprising a central, partially screw-threaded rod having a head at one end whereby it may be rotated, a collar loosely mounted on the unthreaded portion of the rod and having outwardly extending, screw threaded arms, a nut mounted on the screw-threaded portion of the rod and having lugs, pairs of radially extending arms pivoted to said lugs, the pairs of arms having a series of registering perforations, oppositely disposed jaws having shanks extending approximately parallel to the central rod and having perforations, pins passing through the pairs of arms and through the perforations of the jaws, the ends of the shanks remote from the jaws being formed with perforations through which the screwthreaded arms loosely pass, and nuts on said screwthreaded arms engaging against the'inside faces of said shanks.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
