UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARVIN D. EneEEroN, or BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
NAIL-FULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,223, dated August 14,1883.
Application filed March 16, was. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN D. EDGERTON, of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Pullers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
' and exact description thereof, whereby a person skilled in the art can make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters 'of reference marked thereon. J
Like letters in the figures indicate the same parts.
Figure 1 is a side View of my device as used in drawing a nail from a box. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a. detail side view, on an enlarged scale, of the claws of the device. Fig. 4 is a view in section of the claws on the plane denoted by line w of Fig.
3. Fig. 5 is a face view of a hammer embodying the main feature of my improvement.
. My invention relates to the class of devices used for drawing nails when driven with the heads flush with or below the surface of the article in which they are fastened.
The main feature of my invention consists in providing the claws, made otherwise in the usual form, with flanges projecting from" the outer surface of the claws, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter more fully described. i
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes a bar of metal, preferably steel, pro" vided with the forked end b, the inner surface of the fork being beveled in themanner usual in nail or tack drawing devices, and curved to form a lever.
The letter 0 denotes a bent clamp pivoted to the bar a; c, sharpened teeth on its lower end, adapted to catch into the side of a box when the levera is depressed after the claw has been forced into Contact with the head of a nail on the upper surface of the box. The edge of each of the claws at the opening between them is extended by an outwardly-pro jecting rib or flange, b, to a comparatively thin edge, the V-shaped slope of the opening.
between the claws being continued to the outer edge of theflange. My object in providing the claws at this place with the thin-edged pro jections is to enable the tool to be forced into seat by means of my device.
.well, whether the bar is the wood, carpet, or other material from which the nail or tack is to be withdrawn in such manner as to surely graspthe nail or tack, and then, as the handle of the tool is. depressed, to draw them as the broader bearing-surface of the outer face of the claw is reached.
To use my device, the points of the claws are forced by pressure, or by the aid of a mallet,
into the wood at each side of the head of the nail to be drawn, the outer edge of the flanges I) being thin and easily forced into the wood. As soon as the bar-surface b of the claws comes in Contact with the surface of the box the clamp c is caught into the side of the box by a slight blow, and then the lever-handle is depressed'and thenail withdrawn from the box. The clamp 0' tends to hold' the claws of the bar in contact with the nail during the operation- Fig. 4 shows a nail started from its Fig. 5 shows the main feature of my device i that is, the comparatively sharp edged projecting flange on the inner edges of the clawsas applied to the claws of an ordinary carpenculiar feature is applicable to it and will work provided or not with a pivoted clamp, c.
It is obvious that in some alternate forms of my deviceas in tack-pullersthe office of the flange b may be performed by sloping the lower faces of the claws so as to meet the inner faces at an acute angle.
I claim as my invention-- 1. As a new artieleof manufacture, a nailpuller consisting of the bar or handle 64, having claws b,.the inner faces of the claws and the lower surfaces near the points of the claws forming acute angles, preferably slightly blunted,
all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a nail-puller, claws having the V- shaped opening, and provided on their outer faces with the projecting flanges adjacent to tershammer; and it is obvious that this pethe opening at its sides, all substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
MARVIN D. EDGERION.
