COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented NOV. 12, 1907.
. Application filed January 7.1907. Serial No. 351.271.
v To all whom it may concern:
at Chrisrnan, in the county oi Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to improvements in a combination tool, and the object of the invention is to provide a practical and convenient tool with a hammer head at one end for driving, and with a device at the other end which is adapted for drawing' fence staples, tightening ience wires, and removing weather-boarding, box-covers, and nailed boards ot' all kinds, and Which is particulary efficient as a nail puller.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which also illust-rate a 'few of the many uses to which our invention may be applied.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views,-Fignre 1 is a top plan view of our invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view oi' the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing its use as a staple extractor for Wire fences. Fig. Il is a view oi' a box corner showing the use ol our tool Afor drawing thevnails.
Our tool will preferably be made out or' steel or iron.
7 represents the body of the tool, and 8 a doubleended hammer-head, at one end of the body, which also serves as a handle when the other end of the tool is used. The opposite end of the body 7, from the head 8, is provided with the flat, outwardly pointed wedge or chisel 9. This end is provided with the deep notch l0, terminating at its inner end with a taper, the purpose oi which slot is to allow the wedge-end to Astraddle nails, staples, and the like, which are to be drawn. The end 9 is made tapering so as to be used as a wedge to be driven into cracks between boards or other objects nailed together, and which are to be separated.y By forcing the end 9 into the cracks, the
removal et' the nails, holding the parts together, will be started. For pulling the nails after they have thus been started, we prefer to use the pulling device on the side of the end 9. A round-bottom notch 12 is formed in the thick part ol the wedge 9, in from one face of the wedge, and extending nearly but not quite through the thickness of the wedge, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. A diamond shaped hole Il is then formed in the bottom of the notch l2, and a slot to the outside, of the hole lil, is formed so as to provide a pair of opposed prongs, the slot leading into the hole 14 permits the stem or body of the nail to be drawn to pass when the head may be too large to go through the hole I4. AS the hole 14 tapers both ways from this entering slot it is o bvious that the tool may be either pushed or pulled under the head oi' the nail to engage it for removal by an upward movement of the end 8 of the tool. This slot will also allow the tool to pull wire staples from fence-posts when the wire has been broken, as shown in Fig. 3.
The illustrations show onl)r a few oi the many uses to which this convenient tool will lend itself, and its construction and operation are so obvious that further v description is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A tool provided in its face with a notch or dent; the bottom of said dent being provided with a perforation formed haringiy from its ends towards the center of the dent, and having a side entrance thereto from the edge of the tool and communicating' with the central portion of the perforation, and forming' thereby a pair of opposed prongs which terminate in a feather edge.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seais at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 27th day of December, A. D. one thousand nine hundred :1nd six.
