Description

PATENTED MAY 2, 1906.
T. F. THOMPSON.
NAIL SET.
APPLIOATION FILED DEO.7,1903.
UNITED STATES Patented May 2, 1905.
THOMAS FRANKLIN THOMPSON, OF EMPIRE, OREGON.
. NAIL-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,564, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed December 7, 1903. Serial No. 184,173.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS FRANKLIN THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Empire, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful N ail-Set, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to nailsets, and more particularly adapted for usein connection with tongued and grooved material, the object being to provide a simple and efiicient device by means of which a nail may be neatly set in the tongued edge of a piece of timber without defacing or injuring said tongue; and with this object in view the invention consists, essentially, in the employment of a smooth block aving a settingplunger working therein, said grooved block being adapted to fit the tongue of the piece of timber and the plunger the nail to be set.
The'invention consists also in certain de tails of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming partof this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, a portion being broken away to disclose the end of the plunger. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In carrying out my invention I employ a block A of any suitable size, which block is preferably of malleable iron, but may be made of wood or other suitable material. This block is essentially rectangular in shape, and one of its long edges is grooved longitudinally, as shown at B, and at the center this edge is cut away, as shown at O, the depth of said cut-away portion being slightly greater than the depth of the groove B, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The block has aboss or enlargement D on one side, which extends from the cut-out portion O to the opposite edge of the block, the faces of the boss being oblique, and an oblique bore D extends through the said boss, and located in said bore is the plunger E, having a head E upon the outer end. The plunger is slotted longitudinally, as shown at E adjacent the inner end, and a transverse pin F passes through the block and through the lon itudinal groove in the pin, thereby limiting the movement of the plunger. A coil-spring G is arranged around the plunger between the head of the same and the block A, bearing at one end on Ellie plunger-head and at the other end on the H indicates a block of wood inserted in the recess I, formed in the outer edge of the block A, said block of wood being inserted at that point for the purpose of providing a suitable surface against which a blow may be struck for the purpose of causing the tongue and grooved timber to tightly engage each other, it being common at the present time to employ a small piece of the tongued and grooved timber for this purpose.
In operation the nail to be set is drawn into the tongued side of the piece of lumber the proper distance. The block A is then placed against the said tongued side so that the plunger will rest directly over the nail to be set, and by striking a sharp blow upon the head of the plunger the nail will be set without damage or injury to the tongue of the lumber, and inasmuch as nails are always started at an angle the plunger being arranged obliquely will continue them in their proper direction. The spring G normally holds the plunger projected outwardly and serves to throw same outwardly immediately after the nail has been set.
K indicates the opening for the purpose of providing a suitable grip; but this may be dispensed with, if so desired.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and efficient form of nail set capable of Carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A nail-set comprising a block longitudinally rooved along one side to fit a tongue, the saicI block having a transverse bore arranged obliquely with reference to the groove, and a plunger adapted to work in the bore.
2. A nail-set comprising a block cut away midway its ends on one side, and longitudinally grooved to fit a tongue on the said side,
the groove intersecting the cut-out portion, and having a bore extending from the opposite side of the block and alining with the cutout portion, the said bore being oblique with reference to the plane of the groove, and a plunger adapted to Work with a limited move ment in the said bore.
3. A nail-set comprising a block having a longitudinal groove in one side, said side being to cut away about midway its length, a bore extending from said out-away portion to the opposite side of the block, a plunger located in said bore, together With means for preventing said plunger being WithdraWn from the bore, as set forth.
