CARPENTERS TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 36), T915.
Application filed April 28, 1914. Serial No. 834,926.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAYMOND F. NASH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Moritz, county of Deuel, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Tools, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the manner of applying the tool to a stud ding; and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the tool.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple tool of the lever class for twisting and pulling vertical studding into proper position with respect to adjacent walls and timbers, and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The device consists of a straight bar a of steel having one end bent laterally to form a stirrup for reception of one edge of the studding, said stirrup consisting of a rear bar I) set at right angles to the bar a, and an outer bar 0 arranged parallel with the bar a and a distance therefrom approximately equal to the thickness of the studding on which the tool is adapted to be used.
In Fig. 1 I show the manner of applying the device to the studding. Standing in front of the studding, the carpenter hooks the device over the rear edge of the studding as shown, the parts I), a forming a stirrup for the reception of the studding, the part a lying on one face of the stud ding, the main bar on the other face of the studding, and the rear bar 6 engaging the back edge of the studding. Centrally of the back bar I; is placed a sharpened spike (Z whose sharpened end enters the rear face of the studding and prevents the tool working upwardly or downwardly on the studding while it is being manipulated. When the device is thus attached to a piece of-studding that has been put in place, the operator may, by laterally wiggling or vibrating and by pulling, readily work the piece of studding into proper position with respect to the adjacent pieces of studding or wall of the building. By simply pushing slightly backwardly on the tool, the sharpened spike may be disengaged from the studding and the tool may then be slipped upwardly or downwardly to bring it into engagement with another part of the studding where a more effective twisting and shifting of the studding may be accomplished. The inner face of the outer member c of the stirrup is beveled off forwardly at its forward end, as at e, to facilitate the engagement of the tool with the studding, and the handle end of the bar a is flattened and formed into a curved claw 7 which is used for pulling nails and for other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A carpenters tool consisting of a metal bar provided at one end with a stirrup projecting laterally from the bar and opening toward the handle end of the bar, the stirrup on the back bar I) provided with a forwardly projecting spike, and also of an outer bar 0 arranged at a distance from the Inalfil bar and approximately parallel therewit In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
