ADJUSTABLE SUPPORTING BRACKET FOR WEATHER BOARDS. N0. 368,574. Patented Au yzs, 1887..
my W '3 NITED rare s a'rnnr rrrcn.
CHRISTIE EBY, OF EAGLE RIVER, WISCONSIN.
ADJUSTABLE SUPPORTING-BRACKET FOR WEATHER-BOARDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,57 dated August 23, 18 87. Application filed August 30, 1886. Serial No. 212,162. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CHRISTIE EBY, of Eagle River, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Supporting-Brackets for Weather-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In erecting houses, particularly frame buildings, carpenters, in fitting long pieces of board in position, require some kind of support temporarily for the board from which the piece is to be cut that is to be fitted into the vacant space, and have been accustomed, where it could be done, to drive nails into the woodwork whereon to support the board. This has been the common practice, especially in fitting clapboards and weather-boards. This method of supporting the board is objectionable in not being convenient, in wasting nails,
and injuring the building. To obviate this inconvenient and wasteful former method is the object of my invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, but showing modified form of bolt-head. Fig. 3 is a section of the siding and corner board of a building, with two of my devices in position thereon to show the manner of using them.
The same letters refer to like parts in all the views.
Astr-i p of iron, or metal strap, A, is provided at one end with a hook, B, which hook is adapted to take on to and be held by the supporting structure. Another metal strap, C,
is provided at its upper extremity with a shoulder, D, and guard E. This strapC is also provided with a longitudinal slot, F, through which a short retaining-bolt or set-screw, G, having a large head, passes and enters, turning by a screw-thread into an aperture there for in strap A, whereby the strap C is movable longitudinally upon and adjustable to the strap A. A series of notches, H H, at any desired distance apart, in the edge of strap A, are made for a scale, whereby the shoulder D on strap C may be adjusted at any desired distance from the hook B, and two or more devices may be readily adjusted alike with reference to such distanceof the shoulder D from hook B.
In Fig. 3, I and J represent clapboards, and K the corner board on a building, and two of my devices are shown on the clapboard J in position for supporting a piece of clapboard temporarily while being measured or fitted to fill the space between the clapboard I and corner board, K, showing the manner of using my device.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a thin metal strap. A, a thin metal hook, B, integral with and at the upper extremity of the strap A, and extending rearwardly therefrom, a strap, C,provided with shoulder D and slot F, and the set-screw G, turning through the slot F into but not beyond the strap A, whereby the strap C is adj ustably secured upon the front surface of the strap A, the shoulders D projecting forwardl y therefrom, substantially as described.
2. The thin metal strap A, the hook B, integral with strap A, and the scale H on strap A, in combination with the thin metal strap 0, provided with shoulder D and slot F, and adj ustably secured on the surface of the strap A on the side opposite to the hook E by the set-screw G, turning through the slot F, into strap A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIE EBY.
