WEATHER=BOARD GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,792, dated July 29, 1884.
Application filed May 21,1884. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD D. STACEY and WILLIAM K.VANCE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for eather-Boarding 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whicha Figure 1 is a perspective view showing our improved clamp and gage for weather-board- Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to clamps and gages for weather-boarding; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a flat bar, the upper end, B, of which is bent outward at a right angle to the bar, forming a shoulder, the outer end of which forms an upwardly bent lip, C, and which shoulder serves to support the clapboard to be nailed up. A block, D, slides upon the bar, having a slot, E, near one end, and may be adjusted upon the bar by means of a setserew, F 5 and the inner end of the block,which is sufliciently long to admit of the lower edge of a clapboard to rest against its upper side, is provided with a tapering upwardly-projecting plat-e, G, which may be inserted between the lower edge of the clapboard last nailed up and the upper portion of the clapboard nailed up before the latter, the lower end of the lastthe elapboarding.
nailed clapboard being clamped between the l tapering plate and the flat bar. A. screw, II, having its inner end reduced and sharpened, as shown at I, turns in a screw-threaded perforation, J, in the lower portion of the flat bar, and serves to prevent the clamp from sliding down, being screwed into the side of It will now be seen that when the clamp is to be used the sliding block is adjusted at a distance from the shoulder upon the upper end of the bar equal to the width or distance between the lower edge of the last-nailed clapboard and .the lower edge of the clapboard to be nailed, whereupon the tapering plate is pushed up between the last nailed clapboard and the board before it, the screw turned in until it bites in the clapboarding, and the lower edge of the board to be nailed may now rest upon the shoulder, being supported upon the same while it is being nailed fast.
" Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the flat bar having its upper end bent at a right angle, and having the outer end of the said bent end bent upward, and provided with a screw-threaded perforation in its lower portion, the sliding block having a slot near one end, an upwardlyprojecting tapering plate at its other end, and having a set-screw entering the slot, and the screw turning in the perforation in the lower portion of the bar, and having its inner end reduced and pointed, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto aflixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
EDXVARD I). STACEY. WVILLIAM K. VANCE.
