To whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, V. H. H. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Shingle and Siding Hook or Gage; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- V Figure l is a perspective view of my improved combined shingling and siding hook or gage. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the operation of the invention as a shingling-gage.

The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.

This invention relates to an implement de signed to be used as a combined shingling and siding hook or gage, and it has for its object to provide 'a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general eiiiciency.

\Vit-h these ends in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the body of my improved implement, which consists of a straight metallic bar, the lower end of which is bent so as to form a hook, B, terminating in a fiat base, 0. The upper end of the bar A is provided with two upturned points or prongs, D D.

E is a sleeve arranged to slide upon the central portion of the bar A, which is provided with a shoulder, F, to limit the movement of the said sleeve in a downward direction. Said sleeve is provided with a slot, G, through which passes a setscrew, H, entering the body A, and which will serve to retain the sleeve in any position to which it may be adjusted. The sleeve E is provided with a downwardextending bracket, 1, terminating in a series of points or prongs, J J, and the upper side of the sleeve is formed with a loop, K. The outer flat sprin M, having a flat and straight portion, N, e xtending upwardly under the body A, and about parallel thereto, and a curved or spring portion, 0, extending around the hook B and over the body A, through the loop K of sleeve E, and terminating between the points or prongs D D at the upper end-of the bar or body A. The under side of the body A may be provided with a series of gagemarks, 1? I, to regulate the adjustment of the sleeve E.

The operation of the invention is as follows: When used as a shingling-hook, the implement is grasped with the right hand below the sleeve E, and the upper curved portion of the spring M is pressed with the thumb, thus forcing the straight flat portion of the spring in a downward and outward direction, and enabling it to be slid under the last course but one of the shingles which have already been nailed into position, until the lower edge of said course shall rest upon the base 0 of the heel; B. Pressure is then applied to the upper looped portion of the sleeve E, thus forcing the points or prongs J J into the shingles, where the implement will thus be held with sufficient security. Two of the implements are used a sufficient distance apart, and upon the brackets I I of the sleeves E E is rested a straight-edge, Q, which serves as a gage for the lower edges of the shingles of the course to be placed in position, thus insuring absolute regularity. When the course has beeen placedin position, the hooks and straiglit edge are moved up one course, and so on, thus enabling the work to be performed evenly and accurately, and with no loss of time.

The operation of the device as a siding-gage is substantially the same, with the exception that the portion N of the spring M is slid under the last siding-board placed in position, and the straight-edge is dispensed with.

As a siding-gage this device is especially useful, inasmuch as it serves to hold the boards in position, and prevents them from being blown ofi' while the ends are being cut off and fitted. The adjustable sleeve serves to regulate the amount of shingle or weather boarding that shall be exposed to the weather.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the 7 United States 1. In a combined shingling and siding hook or gage, the combination, with a bar or body having at its lower end a downturned hook terminating in a flat base, of an adjustable sleeve having a downward-extending bracket I slotted sleeve E, having bracket I, terminating in prongs J J, and loop K, the set-screw H, andthe spring M, pivoted on a headed stud upon the outer side of hook B, and having straight flat portion N, extending under and about parallel. to the bar A, and curved spring portion extending through the loop K of sleeve E, and terminating between the prongs D D of bar A, all arranged and operating substantially as and -for'the purpose herein set forth.
