SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,690, dated October 18, 1898. Application led January 19, 1898. Serial No. 667,164. (No model.)

Beit known that I, JAMEs II. WHITE, of Ansonia, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Framing-Square, oi' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved framing-square arranged to permit a carpenter or other person to conveniently, accurately, and quickly lay out mortises, tenons, or the like either on the top, side, or bottom of the timber Without requiring turning of the latter.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fullydescribed hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speeication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a plan view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
The improved framing-square is provided with two side arms A and B, rigidly connected with each other by a mortise-and-tenon bar O, preferably formed with a rectangular aperture O' one inch in width to leave side arms C2 C3, likewise one inch in width, so that the two can be used for laying off one-inch, twoinch, or three-inch mortises and tenons, the edges of the arms C2 and OS serving to lay off one-inch tenons and mortises, the inner edge of the arm C3 and the outer edge of the arm C2 for two-inch mortises and tenons, and the outer edges of both arms C2 C3 for three-inch mortises and tenons.`
The side arm A extends on both sides of the bar C, the upper member A being formed with an elongated slot A2, adapted to be engaged by a clamping-screw D, held on a head E, provided on its other end with a similar clamping-screw D', engaging a slot B,formed inthe other arm B, the said slots A2 and B being parallel to each other to permit of adj usting the head F. toward or from the bar C and parallel thereto. The lower member A3 of the arm A is formed with an elongated slot A4, adapted to be engaged by a clampingscrew F, held on a gage-plate G, provided with a brace G,carrying a clamping-screw F, likewise engaging the slot A4. The gage-plate G extends at a right angle to the arm A and parallel to the bar C, and', like the head E, is adjustable towardpor from said bar C, according to the width of thetimber on which the device is used.
The several arms A and B, the bar C, and the gage plate G are graduated in linear measurement, (with inches and s ubdivisions,) as is plainly shown in Fig. l, to facilitate adjustment of the parts according to the size of the timber under treatment. Thus if the device is used for seven-inch timber, for instance, and two inch mortises and tenons then the inner edge of the head E is set two inches from the outer edge of the arm O2 and the gage-plate G is set two inches from the outer edge of the arm C3. The tenons, as well as the mortises, can now be laid out on the timber by abutting the head E on one side thereof and drawing the' mortise-and-'tenon lines along-the outer edge of the arm O2 and the inner edge .of the arm C3.
i/Vhen the device is set as described, it can be readily used for laying off one, two, or
three inch mortise two inches from the edge of the timber and any desired length. For three-inch mortise lines are drawn along the outer edges of the arms C2 C3. For a oneinch mortise lines are drawn along the inner edges of thearms O2 C3.
i The head E is adjustable to lay off the mortise any desired distance from the edge or corner of the timber, it being understood that when the device is used the head abuts against the adjacent face or the end of the timber. The head E permits of readily sliding the framing-square along over the side of the timber on which the mortise is to be marked,
it being understood that the lines for the length of the mortise are drawn along the outer edge of the arm A. The gage-plate G and the head E are adjusted so as to remain parallel at all times with the mortise-bar O.
