Description

- Mel) 0. G. OSTEMAN'.
BEVEL.
Patented July 25, 1893.
NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
CARL G. OSTEMAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE S. A. WVOODS MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,199, dated July 25, 1893.
Application filed March 6, 1893. Serial No. 464,854. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL G. OSTEMAN, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Universal Bevels, of which .the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to universal bevels.
The so-called universal bevels as at present constructed consist of ahead and a tongue, both slotted longitudinally and connected by means of an adjustable thumb screw. The range of adj ustability of these bevels is limited and by reason of one member lying across or on top of the other the bevel cannot be laid fiat upon a sheet of drawing paper or upon a working surface, one of the members always being raised somewhat from the surface.
The object of this invention is to provide a universal bevel of practically unlimited range of adjustment, and one in which both members shall lie flat upon the working surface.
Figure 1, represents one form of bevel embodying this invention. Fig. 2, shows the parts in a different position. Fig. 3, a cross section taken on the dotted line 00% Fig. 2; and Figs. 4 and 5, rear side views of the bevel showing the parts in different positions.
Referring to the drawings, the bevel consists primarily of two independent members a, I), provided respectively with longitudinal slots at, b, to receive the shanks of the thumb screw bolts 0, the members a, b, at their rear sides being rabbeted or countersunk to receive the heads 0' of the said bolts below the surfaces of the members, as shown best in Figs. 3, 4 and 5.
The bolts 0 project upwardly from the members a, I), through a slot at in a preferably curved link (1, see Fig. 1, and receive upon their ends the thumb nuts d by means of which the two members of the bevel and the link may be clamped in any desired adjusted positions.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 3, that the under surfaces of the two members, 2'. e., the surfaces which rest upon the working surface are perfectly smooth, the bolt heads being sunk below or flush with the surfaces and also that the two surfaces lie in the same plane so that both may lie flat upon a surface when required.
1 preferably provide the members with angular ends, as shown, the angles being varied to meet the requirements of the particular class of work for which the bevel is designed. For instance, in the particular bevel shown, the member a, has one of its ends cut at an angle of thirty degrees, such angle being stamped upon the member, as shown, while its opposite end is cut at an angle of sixty degrees, which angle is also stamped upon the member. The member I) has one of its ends cut at an angle of ninety degrees and its opposite end at an angle of forty-five degrees both being indicated, as shown.
To illustrate the universality of theinstrument, reference may be had first to Fig. 1, wherein the two members are shown as employed in measuring the angle of the head of a screw,'the curved link d permitting the entire head to be viewed at the same time that it is being measured.
In Fig. 2, the two members are shown as arranged parallel and in contact with each other, the angular ends 45 and 30 at that time forming the correct angle for an eight sided or octagonal nut, while the opposite ends and 90 form the correct angle for a hexagonal nut. In Fig. 4, the two members are shown as adjusted in position to measure an angle of a dovetail groove or projection, while in Fig. 5, the same members are shown as adjusted for measuring a dovetail of a different angle, the angle in the latter instance being fixed by bringing the member a, flush against the angular end 45 of the member I).
In Fig. 5, by swinging the member a, up and over to the left and down in contact with the squared ninety degree end of the member I), as shown in dotted lines, a perfect square is produced and the pointed end 30 of the member a, may well be used in connection with the straight under edge of the member I) to measure the depth of a V-shaped slot or any other depression or opening.
It will be seen that the two members may be turned about each other in any direction, and by means of the adj ustability of the link in the slots of the members, said members may be moved into any desired positions with re lation to each other, the fixed angles to which the ends of the members are cut and marked materially assisting in the adjustment of the members for the usual angles found in ordinary machine work.
The invention is not restricted to the particular shape or construction of the various parts for the same obviously may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
If desired, either or both of the members may he graduated to a scale, and also the curved link (Z, the instrument in the latter instance then serving as a protractor.
I claim- 1. A universal bevel consisting of two independent members, in combination with a link connecting the said members at one of their faces to thereby permit the opposite faces of said members to be laid flat upon the same workin g surface throughout their lengths, and clamping devices to clamp said members in relative adjusted positions, substantially as described.
2. Auniversal bevel consisting of two independent members, in combination with a curved link connecting the same, and clamping devices to retain said members and link in adjusted positions with relation to each other, substantially as described.
3. A universal bevel consisting of two independent members having longitudinal slots,
in combination with a slotted link, and adjusting devices connecting said members and link and made adjustable in the slots of the same, substantially as described.
4:. A universal bevel consisting of two independent members having slots,in combination with a slotted link, and thumb bolts passed through the slot in said link and through the slots in said members respectively and having their heads flush with the under surfaces of said members, whereby said members and link may be clamped in adjusted position with relation to each other, substantially as described.
5. A universal bevel consisting of two inde pendent members having longitudinal slots and angular ends, in combination with a link connecting said members with their under faces in the same plane, and adjusting devices to clamp said members and link in adj usted positions with relation to each other, whereby one of the said members may be moved about and against the angular end of the other to thereby fix the angle between the two members as of the angle of said angular end, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL G. OSTEMAN.
