To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM A. Poses, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification. I
The implement which is the subject matter of the present application for patent is designed more particularly for steamfitters use for properly positioning a plurality of pipes relative to each other.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a level having means for indicating the degree a pipe to which the implement is applied deviates from the horizontal or vertical, thereby enabling the workman to accurately position a plurality of pipes inparallelism where the pipes are to'be mounted at an inclination.
The invention is not limited to steamfitters use butmay, with equal facility, be employed for any other work requiring the proper positioning of a plurality of objects relative to each other.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the implement, also illustrating its application, Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of one end of the same and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the stock of the implement, the same being a straight beam, and being equipped with spirit levels 6 and 7 arranged at right angles as usual in implements of this kind. The stock has end recesses which produce extensions 8. These extensions, at one end of the stock, carry a traveling screw stem 9, said extensions being spaced, and the stem extending therebetween at a right angle to the spirit level 6, the latter being parallel to the base of the stock. One of the extensions which support the stem has a transverse aperture 10 in which one end of the stem seats, said end being unthreaded. The opposite end of the stem is screw-threaded. The other extension has a tapped aperture 11 to receive the threaded end of the stem. Thus, when the stem is turned it travels in the direction of its length. The intermediate portion of the stem has a knurled finger piece 12, the same being fast on the stem. The aperture 10 passes entirely through the extension so that the stem may be run down far enough to project clownward below the base of the stock for a purpose to be presently described.
On one of the faces of the stock 5, adjacent to that end carrying the screw stem 9, is mounted a pivoted pointer 13 indicating on an arcuate scale 14. The rear end of the pointer is forked, as indicated at 15 to straddle the finger piece 12. It will therefore be evident that the pointer is swung when the screw stem. 9 is turned, the finger piece traveling with the latter.
The implement is used as follows: In fitting pipes which are to be horizontal, the screw stem 9 is backed so that it does not project from the base of the stock 5. The implement is then used in the same manner as an ordinary level. If the pipes are to have a slant or inclination, the stock is applied to the first pipe of the series, and the screw stem is turned to project from the base of the stock, it being adyanced until the bubble of the level 6 indicates that the, stock is horizontal. The extent to which the screw stem projects from the base is indi cated by the pointer 13 on the scale 14. The
next, and each subsequent pipe in the series, 7
may then be accurately positioned parallel to the first pipe, by letting the base portion of the stock and the projecting end of the screw stem rest on the next pipe and then adjusting said pipe until the level 6 indicates that the stock is horizontal. The spirit level 7 enables the implement to be used vertically also.
I claim 1. The combination with a level, of a stem carried by one end of the stock of the level and adjustable to project from the base thereof, a pivoted pointer on the stock, the latter having a scale on which the pointer indicates, and a connection between the pointer and the stem for actuating the former.
2. The combination with a level, of a travcling screw stem carried by the stock of the level and adjustable to project from the base thereof, a pivoted pointer on said stock, the
latter having a scale on which the pointer stem mountedin the apertures and having a threaded portion which screws into the threaded aperture, said stem being adjustable to project through the other aperture from the base of the stock, and means for indicating on the stock the extent the stem "is thus projected 4c. The combination with a level, the stock of which has spaced end extensions, one of which extensions has a threaded aperture and the other extension having an aperture opening through the base of the stock, a stem mounted in the apertures and having a threaded portion which screws into the threaded aperture said stem being adjustable to project through the other aperture from the base of the stock, a pivoted pointer on the stock, the latter having a .scaleon Which the pointer indicates, and a connection between the pointer and thestem for actuating the former.
