UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
CHARLES I/V. HOVIS, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN BLANOHFIELD.
COMBINED TRY-SQUARE AND BEVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,167, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed March 6, 1900. Serial No. 7,566. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Hovrs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at VVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Try-Square and Bevel; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved combined try-square and bevel; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved combined try-square and bevel, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the tool, showing the bevel-blade in an altered position. Fig. 4c is across-section taken through the graduated slide, the said section being taken through the line X X of Fig. 2.
To put my invention into practice, and thereby providea combination-tool for carpenters and other woodworkers use, I provide what is known in the art as a trysquare, which consists of a graduated blade 2, arranged at right angles with a suitable handle 1. Attached to the outerextremity of this handle 1 by means of a threaded bolt 9 and thumb-screw 10 is a slotted blade 11, capable of being moved in the direction of its length and clamped or made rigid in the desired position by the said screw 9. Arranged in suitable slides S at the inner side of the handle 1 is a piece or stop 5, capable of being moved along the said slide to correspond in position to any of the graduations marked upon a plate 7, forming a portion of the slide.
In operation the tool may be used as a trysquare when set as shown at Fig. 1, or the bevel portion 11 may be turned about its pivotal point and inserted in the handle 1, as shown in dotted lines at Fig. 3 of the drawings.
If it is desired to make a cut of any desired pitch, the slide 5 is moved along the graduated plate 7 to the proper figure indicating that particular angle and the blade 11 revolved until it rests upon the said slide 5, and in which position it is clamped by the thumb-screw l0.
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. Therefore I do not confine myself to the exact form shown and described.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is
The herein-described combined try-square and bevel, consisting of the graduated blade 2, the handle 1, arranged at right angles therewith, the bevel-blade 11 provided with a slot 12, extending in the direction of its length, the threaded bolt 9, and thumb-screw 10 for confining the said blade 11 in position, and the sliding piece 5, operating along a graduated plate 7, whereby the bevel-blade 11 may be set at various predetermined angles, or folded within the handle 1; all arranged and combined for service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES w. HOVIS.
